Background

Rob Bernshteyn is a veteran enterprise-software executive best known for building Coupa Software into a category-defining business-spend-management company. He served as Coupa's CEO and Chairman of the Board from February 2009 to May 2023 — a roughly 14-year tenure during which he scaled the company from an early-stage startup to a business generating hundreds of millions in annual recurring revenue, took it public on the NASDAQ in October 2016, and ultimately saw it acquired by Thoma Bravo (a deal valued at roughly $8 billion) in 2023.

Before Coupa, Bernshteyn spent nearly three decades in the software industry. He was VP of Global Product Marketing and Management at SuccessFactors (later acquired by SAP) from 2004 to 2009, and Director of Product Management at Siebel Systems from 2001 to 2004. Earlier in his career he held roles at McKinsey & Company and Accenture. He holds a B.S. in Information Systems from the State University of New York (SUNY Albany) and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

In February 2024, Bernshteyn joined ICONIQ Growth as a General Partner, deepening a relationship that dated back to ICONIQ's earlier investment in Coupa. Alongside his fund role he continues to invest personally as an angel and serves on corporate boards, including PTC, Inc. (since September 2024); he previously sat on Medallia's board (2019–2021). He is a published author — his book *Value as a Service: Embracing the Coming Disruption* codifies his operating philosophy — and a guest lecturer at Harvard and Stanford business schools who appears frequently in Forbes, Fortune, Bloomberg, and NPR.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • "Value as a Service." His core operating and investing philosophy is that measurable, quantifiable value delivered to customers — not features or the delivery model — is the ultimate competitive battleground. He looks for companies organized around demonstrable customer outcomes.
  • Enterprise/B2B software first. Angel and fund interests cluster in SaaS, enterprise applications, cloud infrastructure, fintech/financial software, and industrial/manufacturing software.
  • Operator-led conviction. Having scaled Coupa from startup to IPO, he emphasizes disciplined execution, strong company culture rooted in core values, and the ability to scale from a handful of employees to thousands.
  • Angel check sizing. Personal angel investments have been reported in the $5K–$50K range (≈$25K sweet spot), typically at seed stage; through ICONIQ Growth he backs later, growth-stage companies.
  • On his motivation: *"I'm excited about engaging in venture capital at this turbulent, yet highly promising time... playing a role in helping inspired entrepreneurs realize their dreams."*

Notable Investments

  • MaintainX — maintenance/asset-management SaaS for industrial and frontline teams; participated around its Series C (~$50M round, Dec 2023); the standout unicorn in his angel portfolio.
  • Didero — AI-driven supply-chain/procurement software (adjacent to his Coupa expertise); seed round (~$7M, 2024).
  • Carefull — fintech protecting seniors' finances and daily money management; seed round (~$3M, 2021).
  • Bizly — enterprise meetings/events software; seed round (~$3M, 2019).
  • Waggl, Inc. — employee-listening/feedback platform; backed at seed (2014) and Series A (2018); acquired by Phenom in 2021 (his notable portfolio exit).
