Background
Rob Dyrdek is a former professional skateboarder, television producer, entrepreneur, and investor. He was born on June 28, 1974, in Kettering, Ohio, and became a professional athlete at 16, moving to Southern California to pursue skateboarding rather than completing his senior year of high school. Inc. reports that he was sponsored as a young skater, co-created Alien Workshop with Neil Blender after leaving a board sponsor, and was shaped early by exposure to local entrepreneurs.
Dyrdek built a media career around MTV, including *Rob & Big*, *Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Factory*, and *Ridiculousness*. He also founded Street League Skateboarding in 2010, creating a professional street-skateboarding property, and co-founded Superjacket Productions in 2013. Signal lists his professional-skateboarder period as 1991-2014 and his Dyrdek Machine role beginning in 2016.
In 2016, Dyrdek founded Dyrdek Machine, a venture creation studio. The firm describes itself as a studio that creates companies by combining expertise, capital, and amplification for visionary entrepreneurs. Its site says that since launch it created 18 brands and achieved 6 exits totaling more than $550 million in exit value. In 2025, Dyrdek Machine's LinkedIn profile said the company transitioned to Studio Dyrdek as Dyrdek focused on Existence, his time-intelligence software platform.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Dyrdek Machine's core model is not passive angel investing; the firm states: "We are not just investors. We are co-founders." It provides capital, brand-building, product development, marketing, go-to-market support, fundraising help, and Rob Dyrdek's media amplification.
- The studio invests from the idea stage through launch and scale using its "Machine Method," a five-phase process: Discovery, Diligence, Build, Launch, and Scale.
- Dyrdek looks for businesses with four key ingredients: Do-or-Die leadership, a white-space concept, a clear path to liquidity, and multiple revenue advantages.
- Founder fit is central. Dyrdek Machine defines Do-Or-Diers as entrepreneurs with fortitude, grit, determination, ambition, relentless work ethic, and unwavering self-belief.
- The focus is strongest in consumer brands and media/consumer products, with examples across performance nutrition, nootropic snacks, footwear, alcoholic beverages, filtered showerheads, plant-based snacks, whiskey, and corporate-travel technology.
- TechCrunch reported that Dyrdek describes the model as founder-driven and market agnostic, with Dyrdek Machine often becoming a co-founder, sharing common stock, and making an initial preferred-equity investment.
