Rob Van Wechem

Rob van Wechem is a Dutch investment-management professional with a career spent inside independent private banks. He studied at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (c. 2001–2004) and holds the CFA charter from the CFA Institute. His early experience includes a role at Fortis MeesPierson before he moved into the boutique private-banking world.

He served as Head of Investment Management at Oyens & Van Eeghen N.V. — one of the Netherlands' oldest independent private banks (founded 1797), acquired by Belgium's Banque Delen in 2015. At Oyens he was responsible for building discretionary investment portfolios, including private-equity allocations and "risk-mitigation" strategies for private and institutional clients, and he was frequently cited as the firm's "Hoofd Vermogensbeheer" (Head of Asset Management).

In 2017–2018, following the Delen integration, van Wechem was part of a senior team (led by former CEO Pim Baljet) that departed for InsingerGilissen, the private bank formed from Theodoor Gilissen and Insinger de Beaufort. At InsingerGilissen he worked as an investment specialist, publicly discussing the bank's equity strategy in the Dutch financial press.

Since 2022 he has been at Bank ten Cate & Cie, initially as Head of Customized Solutions ("Hoofd Maatwerkoplossingen"). In January 2025, Financial Investigator reported his promotion to Chief Investment Officer (CIO) of the bank, putting him in charge of its overall investment policy.

• "Focus on iron-strong positions" (the title of his IEX interview) — concentrating on high-margin, market-leading franchises rather than chasing market consensus. An earlier interview was headlined *"Eigenzinnigheid boven marktconsensus"* ("Independent-mindedness over market consensus").
• Long-term, business-model-first analysis over short-term macro trading; he favors firms with pricing power and durable growth runways (e.g., semiconductors positioned for 5G, EV electrification, and renewables).
• ESG screening integrated into selection: categorical exclusion of tobacco (unsustainable model + legal risk) and active engagement with holdings (e.g., Volkswagen) on environmental issues.
• Portfolio construction for wealth clients, including private-equity and downside/risk-mitigation sleeves — the work he built out at Oyens & Van Eeghen — rather than single-startup angel bets.
