Background
Bob Calton is a co-founding partner of Summit Park LLC, a Charlotte, North Carolina private equity firm he launched in 2006 alongside Jim Johnson. He has more than 30 years of principal-investing and investment-banking experience, the majority of it spent advising and investing in lower-middle-market companies. Note that the "Angel Investors / Seed Round" descriptors in the source stub are inaccurate: Summit Park is a control-oriented buyout firm that acquires established, cash-flowing lower-middle-market companies, not a seed-stage angel operation.
Before founding Summit Park, Calton was a Partner at Wachovia Capital Partners (and its predecessor, First Union Capital Partners), where he focused on investments in the business services and manufacturing sectors. Earlier he was a Managing Director and Shareholder at Bowles Hollowell Conner & Co. — until its 1998 sale to First Union Corporation, the leading independent M&A advisory firm focused on the middle market. Prior to business school, he was an Analyst in the investment banking division of Morgan Stanley & Co. in New York and an Associate in venture capital at Morgan Stanley Research Ventures in San Francisco.
A native of Nashville, Tennessee, Calton earned his undergraduate business degree from Southern Methodist University and his MBA from Harvard Business School. He has served on the boards of numerous Summit Park portfolio companies, including Aspirent, Curion, Elliott Aviation, Exacta, Freedom Electronics, Parkline, Tennessee Industrial Electronics, and United Air Temp.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in lower-middle-market businesses with $20–$150M in revenue and $4–$15M in EBITDA, typically as the company's first institutional/outside capital.
- Makes control (majority) investments, partnering with founders and management teams to scale businesses rather than pursuing short-term financial engineering.
- Focuses on two broad categories: Services (professional, commercial & industrial, and consumer services) and Products (manufacturing, value-added distribution, and consumer products).
- Prioritizes companies with high gross margins, recurring business models, diversified revenue, and strong market potential, emphasizing "sustainability, cultural fit, and transparent operations."
- Pursues active, thematic sourcing in subsectors such as critical power services, door and dock solutions, bakery manufacturing, specialty distribution, test & measurement, professional consulting, and residential services — plus add-on acquisitions for existing portfolio companies.
- Supports portfolio companies through an in-house Value Creation Team (VCT) and proprietary sourcing capabilities.
