Background

Robert A. "Rob" Gillam is a third-generation Alaskan investor who serves as CEO and Chief Investment Officer of McKinley Management, the Anchorage-based holding company that oversees McKinley Capital Management (a global institutional equity manager overseeing several billion dollars), McKinley Alaska Private Investment, McKinley Alaska Growth Capital, and McKinley Research Group. He joined McKinley Capital in 1994 and worked his way through sales, portfolio management, and head of international investments before becoming President/CEO and CIO. He was named CEO in 2018 after the unexpected death of his father, the firm's founder.

The firm was founded in 1990 by his father, Robert Byron "Bob" Gillam (1946–2018), a Wharton graduate and UCLA MBA who built McKinley Capital into one of Alaska's best-known money managers using quantitative, momentum-oriented equity models and was widely regarded as one of Alaska's wealthiest individuals (notably spending tens of millions opposing the Pebble Mine project). Rob Gillam inherited and now leads that platform; the "[hidden]" address in circulating investor lists traces to the founder and the firm's corporate email convention rather than to a separate person.

Rob Gillam holds a B.S. in Finance from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and is a CFA charterholder with more than 30 years of experience investing across international markets for institutions, pension plans, and sovereign wealth funds. He co-authored published research on global equity markets and Chinese stocks with Nobel laureate Dr. Harry Markowitz. In 2019 he launched McKinley's first private-investment fund focused on Alaska and Arctic opportunities, formally establishing McKinley Alaska Private Investment in 2021.

Beyond the firm, he chairs the board of Microbion Corporation, sits on the board of STAK Energy Corporation, and serves on the investment committee of the Rasmuson Foundation. He lives in Anchorage with his family and is an avid fly-fisherman and collector of Alaska books.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests behind a distinctly Alaska/Arctic thesis: a resource-rich, sparsely populated, infrastructure-short region with strategic geography "bridging Arctic North America and Asia," creating room for "ambitious and disruptive companies."
  • Core edge is stated as proprietary Alaska deal sourcing — "our Alaska connectivity paired with responsible investment experience" — combined with global partnerships for institutional-grade diligence and support.
  • Deploys across the capital stack: venture capital, growth equity, private equity, direct investments, and direct lending, plus backing emerging PE/VC managers.
  • Fund-based rather than personal angel checks: Na'-Nuk Investment Fund I ($117M, launched Jan 2020, fully deployed by end-2022) targeting transportation/logistics, food systems, energy, and Arctic technology; Na'-Nuk Investment Fund II with a $250M target for VC, growth, and PE.
  • Prioritizes sectors tied to Alaska's real economy — seafood/food systems, logistics and cold chain, energy/renewables, aerospace, and resource/mining technology.

Notable Investments

  • Alaska Cargo and Cold Storage — cold-storage facility at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (55-year state land lease); a direct McKinley private investment.
  • Astra — space-launch company operating a spaceport on Kodiak Island, Alaska (Na'-Nuk portfolio).
  • Peter Pan Seafood — vertically integrated Alaska seafood company.
  • Three Bears — Alaska grocery/retail chain (co-invested alongside the Alaska Permanent Fund's in-state program).
  • Additional Na'-Nuk exposure reported across electric/low-emission cargo shipping and seaweed/mariculture ventures.
