Background
Robert "Bob" Goldberg is a co-founder and principal of Bridge Investments, a Chicago-area venture capital firm founded in 1998 and based in Highland Park, Illinois. Before venture investing, he built his career in law: he was a founding partner of Goldberg Kohn Ltd., long regarded as one of Chicago's most respected mid-sized law firms. He founded that firm roughly three decades before co-founding Bridge Investments, giving him an unusually long track record of scaling a professional-services business.
Bob earned his undergraduate degree from Cornell University and his JD from the University of Chicago Law School. His experience growing and managing a services firm has become a recurring template he shares with Bridge's portfolio companies, many of which face the same operational and organizational challenges during periods of rapid growth.
Today Bob functions as the senior, relationship-driven partner at Bridge. Rather than running day-to-day deal execution (which the newer, seed-stage Bridge Venture Fund handles under co-founder Daniel Goldberg), he contributes his network, deal judgment, and strategic guidance to help shape the firm's direction and support founders. Bridge as a whole has invested in roughly 60 companies, with a portfolio that includes about 19 acquisitions.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Backs seed-stage companies, then follows on into Series A and Series B; writes checks from roughly $100K up to $5M, with a sweet spot around $1.5M.
- Firm philosophy (per Bridge Venture Fund): *"Backing underestimated ventures that overdeliver."*
- Concentrates on vertical software & marketplaces and consumer brands — plus adjacent themes in legaltech, food/CPG, restaurant and event technology, and health & wellness.
- Values founders building durable, capital-efficient businesses in categories where the firm has pattern recognition (legaltech and consumer being repeat winners).
- Brings operator-style help on scaling a growing organization, drawing on Bob's decades running a professional-services firm.
