Background

Robert Nels Hoglund spent roughly two decades at Consolidated Edison, Inc. (Con Edison), one of the largest investor-owned utilities in the U.S. He joined the company in April 2004 and became Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer in 2005, a role he held for more than 18 years. As CFO he oversaw accounting, tax, financial planning and analysis, strategic planning, treasury, and enterprise risk management, and led the company's mergers-and-acquisitions efforts. During his tenure Con Edison extended one of the longest dividend-growth records among U.S. utilities, raising its dividend for a 50th consecutive year. He also chaired the board of Con Edison Transmission, Inc. and served on the board of Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc. (a Con Edison subsidiary), where he had earlier served as CFO and Controller.

Before Con Edison, Hoglund spent more than 15 years in investment banking, concentrated in the utility and energy sector. He was a Managing Director in the Mergers & Acquisitions group at Citigroup (and predecessor firms), where he headed the firm's investment banking coverage of North American utilities, advising Fortune 500 utility and energy companies on mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, restructurings, and multi-billion-dollar equity and debt financings. Earlier in his career he worked at Merrill Lynch, at the boutique advisory firm Barr Devlin, and at Morgan Stanley.

Hoglund retired as Con Edison's CFO effective July 8, 2024, succeeded by Kirkland B. Andrews. Since retiring he has moved into corporate governance roles. He was appointed to the board of Middlesex Water Company effective January 1, 2026, sits on the board of South Jersey Industries, and in March 2026 was nominated by Portland General Electric for election to its board (with committee assignments on the Audit & Risk Committee and the Compensation, Culture and Talent Committee). He is also associated with New York cultural nonprofits, including The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Orchestra of St. Luke's.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts in English, a Juris Doctor (JD), and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) — all from the University of Virginia.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Not a documented angel/venture investor. Despite the source stub's "Angel Investor / Seed Round" tag, no evidence of startup, seed, or angel investments was found. His professional profile is that of a utility-sector CFO and public-company board director.
  • Domain of expertise: utility and energy finance — capital allocation, treasury, enterprise risk management, M&A, and large-scale equity and debt financing.
  • What he brings to a board/deal: deep experience in complex utility finance, governance, regulatory-driven capital planning, and multi-billion-dollar transactions, which is why water and electric utilities (Middlesex Water, South Jersey Industries, Portland General Electric) have recruited him as an independent director.

Notable Investments

  • Consolidated Edison, Inc. — SVP & CFO for 18+ years (2005–2024); chaired Con Edison Transmission.
  • Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc. — former CFO & Controller; later board member (Con Edison subsidiary).
  • Middlesex Water Company (NASDAQ: MSEX) — appointed to board of directors effective January 1, 2026.
  • South Jersey Industries — current board director.
  • Portland General Electric (NYSE: POR) — nominated for board election (announced March 2026; term slated to begin around May 1, 2026).
  • Nonprofit boards: The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center; Orchestra of St. Luke's.
