Background

Robert Mayn is a co-founder and Partner of Leading Ridge Capital Partners, a private investment firm he launched in 2009 alongside Warren Coopersmith and Zach Coopersmith. A Certified Public Accountant since 1982, Mayn built a career of more than 25 years in senior corporate finance, administration, and accounting roles before turning to private equity investing. His stated areas of expertise include financial performance and reporting, investor-relationship development, strategic planning, corporate development, technology planning, and team development.

Before co-founding Leading Ridge, Mayn served as Chief Operating and Financial Officer, Executive Vice President, and minority shareholder of Marjack Company, Inc., which he joined in 1998. Working with his future partner Warren Coopersmith, he helped grow Marjack from roughly $22 million to $170 million in revenue over about seven years. Earlier in his career he was an executive officer at a large regional spirits, wine, and beer distributor, and his prior experience spans a computer systems integrator, a retail service business, and public accounting — both in his own firm and with a large national accounting firm. Across his career he has directed or materially participated in more than 35 significant business transactions, including the purchase or sale of business units and material real-estate deals.

At Leading Ridge, Mayn functions as the finance- and operations-oriented partner, applying his CPA and CFO/COO background to the firm's hands-on ownership model. The firm describes itself as running portfolio companies "like a business, not a spreadsheet," developing management teams and installing professional systems and processes to support growth. Its leadership team collectively brings more than 60 years of relevant manufacturing and distribution experience.

The firm's signature deal, in which Mayn was deeply involved, was Rugby Architectural Building Products. Leading Ridge made a growth-equity investment in Rugby in 2011 and backed its expansion from about 145 employees across 11 locations to roughly 560 employees across 31 facilities and nearly $300 million in sales — completing about 16 add-on acquisitions — before selling the company to Hardwoods Distribution Inc. in 2016.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests exclusively in the lower-middle market, making control investments (recapitalizations, buyouts, and growth equity) rather than passive minority or seed checks.
  • Targets companies with roughly $10–50M in revenue and $1–5M of EBITDA — established, cash-generating operating businesses.
  • Concentrates on value-added distribution, asset-light logistics, niche manufacturing/assembly, and business services — sectors the founding team has operated in directly.
  • Adds value through growth capital, operational best practices, business-development expertise, and financial scale, and by developing existing management teams; the firm's stated philosophy is to run its companies "like a business, not a spreadsheet."
  • Frequently backs a buy-and-build strategy, supporting platform companies in executing add-on acquisitions (as demonstrated with Rugby's ~16 acquisitions under its ownership).

Notable Investments

  • Rugby Architectural Building Products — Distributor of architectural wood products, decorative surfacing, and doors/millwork. Growth-equity investment in 2011 (with follow-on debt financing in 2013); grew to ~$300M in sales and 31 facilities; exited via sale to Hardwoods Distribution Inc. (TSX: HWD) in July 2016.
  • Marjack Company — Distribution business where Mayn served as COO/CFO/EVP; associated with the founding team's track record (noted in firm portfolio references).
  • Great Western Products — Manufacturing/distribution portfolio company (referenced among the firm's holdings).
  • ReverTech Solutions — Acquisition-financing deal completed in August 2012.
  • Additional undisclosed recapitalization (2010) and debt/growth-equity (2011–2012) transactions listed in the firm's investment record.
