Robert Nardelli

Robert L. Nardelli (born May 17, 1948, in Old Forge, Pennsylvania) is one of America's best-known operating executives, having led three major corporations before moving into private-equity advisory work. He earned a B.S. in business from Western Illinois University — which he attended on a football scholarship — and an MBA from the University of Louisville. He spent nearly 30 years at General Electric, joining in 1971 as a manufacturing engineer and rising to run GE Power Systems (1995–2000), where he roughly quadrupled operating profits and became one of the top internal candidates to succeed Jack Welch.

After losing that succession contest, Nardelli became Chairman, President and CEO of The Home Depot from December 2000 to January 2007, during which company revenues grew from roughly $45B to $91B, though the stock languished and his exit package (~$210M) drew heavy criticism. He then served as Chairman and CEO of Chrysler LLC from August 2007 through the company's 2009 Chapter 11 bankruptcy and government-brokered restructuring, and later ran Freedom Group (firearms) from 2010 to 2012.

In 2012 Nardelli founded XLR-8 LLC, an investment and advisory firm focused on operational performance improvement, which remains his personal platform. From 2007 to 2015 he held senior roles with Cerberus Capital Management and its operations affiliate, and since August 2015 he has served as a Senior Advisor to Emigrant Bank / Emigrant Capital Corp., where he is listed as a Partner. He is also a Senior Operating Partner at CORE Industrial Partners and a Senior Advisor to EY.

Today Nardelli's work is primarily as an operator-investor and board member rather than a check-writing venture/angel investor: he sits on the board of BWX Technologies (NYSE: BWXT) and on the boards of CORE portfolio companies including Fathom and Aviation Concepts.

• Personal value-add is operational: as a CORE Senior Operating Partner he focuses on deal sourcing, diligence, and implementing an "operating playbook" post-acquisition — he brings turnaround and scale-up expertise more than early-stage capital.
