Background

Robert (Rob) Seminara is one of the most senior investment professionals at Apollo Global Management, the ~$700B+ alternative asset manager. He joined Apollo in 2003 and rose to Partner and a member of the firm's Leadership/Management Committee. In 2013 he relocated to London to lead Apollo's European business, and served for roughly 13 years as Head of Europe and Head of European Private Equity. Under his leadership Apollo's European operation grew dramatically — from just under 50 employees when he arrived to close to 400, and from around $7 billion in assets under management to more than $150 billion, with European capital growing from roughly 10% to over 25% of Apollo's private-equity fund capital.

Before Apollo, Seminara worked in the private equity group at Evercore Partners, and earlier in the Media & Communications group at Lazard Frères & Co. He earned a B.S. in Economics, graduating summa cum laude, from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business.

Seminara has held numerous portfolio-company board seats reflecting Apollo's industrials and packaging franchise, including Chairman of the Board of Lumileds, and board roles at Verallia (glass packaging), Novolex, and Metal Can Corporation. He is a frequent public voice for Apollo on European strategy and the convergence of public and private markets, speaking at industry and alumni events (e.g., the Wharton Club of the UK).

In late 2025/2026, Apollo announced Seminara was stepping out of the Head of Europe role after about 13 years to take on a new, broader global role at the firm, prompting Apollo to search for a successor to lead Europe. The stub description of him as an "Angel Investor" writing "Seed Round" checks is inaccurate — he operates at the opposite end of the market, in large-cap institutional private equity and hybrid/credit.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Stage/type: Large-scale private equity — opportunistic buyouts, corporate carve-outs, deleveraging situations, and hybrid/credit "capital solutions," not venture or seed.
  • "Purchase price matters": Seminara repeatedly frames Apollo PE around valuation discipline and buying well, seeking businesses others undervalue — what he calls finding "diamonds in the rough."
  • Bespoke, creative capital: In higher-rate, volatile environments he emphasizes patient, structured solutions for companies with levered capital structures — hybrid value and credit alongside control equity.
  • Financial institutions & capital solutions: He has flagged the Financial Institutions Group and Capital Solutions (partnering with and providing capital to banks) as areas of particular enthusiasm and near-term opportunity.
  • Local, relationship-driven execution: In Europe he stresses native-language teams and local cultural/regulatory expertise across markets rather than a single centralized approach.
  • Sectors: Strong track record in industrials and packaging (glass, cans, flexible packaging), plus media/communications roots from his Lazard days.

Notable Investments

  • Lumileds — lighting/LED components company; Seminara served as Chairman of the Board (Apollo-backed).
  • Verallia — European glass-packaging producer; board member (Board of Managers).
  • Novolex — packaging products manufacturer; board member.
  • Metal Can Corporation — metal packaging; board member.
