Background

Bob Shingler founded KMJ Partners, LLC in 2003. The firm originally provided operating-partner support and interim CEO services to private equity firms, and its current public positioning centers on CEO coaching, leadership development, Vistage peer advisory boards, and board-level support for private investors.

Shingler began his career at BellSouth Corporation after its 1983 divestiture from AT&T, working on merger-and-acquisition analysis, valuation, and later financial planning for BellSouth Enterprises. In the 1990s, he was an executive with BellSouth International, served on boards of multinational joint ventures in Europe, Asia/Pacific, and Latin America, lived in Europe for four years as BellSouth’s board representative and operating executive, and later served as Deputy CEO of Sonofon A/S in Denmark.

After returning from Europe in the late 1990s, Shingler raised funding from BellSouth Ventures to start a national broadband ISP in Austin, Texas. He later served as President or CEO of multiple technology companies, including Cypress Communications, Broadwing Communications, Albion Connect, and Steadfast.net.

KMJ Partners entered into an agreement with Vistage Worldwide in 2018, and Shingler launched a Portland CEO Peer Advisory Board in June 2019. He also launched a Vistage Key Executive Peer Group in 2020 and began facilitating Vistage Executive Leadership Program groups in 2022. His education includes a BS in Business and Computer Science from Vanderbilt University, an MBA in Finance from Georgia State University, and completion of Vistage Executive Leadership Program coursework through Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Public sources do not verify an active angel-investing thesis, check size, or portfolio for Shingler. The available primary-source record positions him mainly as an operator, executive coach, Vistage Chair, board representative, and advisor to CEOs and investors.
  • KMJ’s operating philosophy emphasizes “strong leadership, clear and compelling strategy, and flawless execution.”
  • His board-services offering is aimed at a limited number of private equity, later-stage venture capital, family, and other private investors who want a hands-on board representative.
  • His target company profile skews toward CEOs of well-funded later-stage startups, lower middle-market firms, and mid-sized privately held companies with defined culture, leadership teams, strategic positioning, and growth potential.
  • He appears most relevant to founders and investors seeking operating help, executive coaching, governance support, leadership-team development, or transition/exit preparation rather than passive seed capital.
