Background
Robert ("Bob") M. Williams, Jr. is a Senior Managing Director and Investment Committee member at J.H. Whitney Capital Partners, the New Canaan, Connecticut private equity firm originally founded in 1946 by industrialist and philanthropist John Hay "Jock" Whitney — widely credited as one of the first U.S. venture/private equity firms. According to firm and regulatory records, Williams has served as a Senior Managing Director and Managing Member since roughly November 2004 and holds an ownership stake in J.H. Whitney Capital Partners, LLC. Over more than 17 years at the firm he has been part of the decision-making team that invested the Whitney V, VI, and VII funds; the firm manages approximately $1.0 billion in private capital and has backed more than 400 companies over its history.
Before joining J.H. Whitney, Williams was a Partner at Duff & Phelps, the advisory firm specializing in valuation, corporate finance, disputes and investigations, and regulatory/governance matters. Earlier in his career he worked in the Financial Advisory Services Group at CIBC and completed the credit training program at The Bank of New York — a background rooted in valuation, corporate finance, and credit that maps naturally onto middle-market buyout investing.
Williams earned a B.A. from Bucknell University and an M.B.A. from Columbia University. As a deal partner he takes active, board-level roles in portfolio companies. Most notably, he served as a director of Aveanna Healthcare Holdings (NASDAQ: AVAH) — a leading provider of pediatric home care and private-duty nursing that J.H. Whitney helped build and took public — where he was a Class I director and sat on the Nominating & Corporate Governance, Compensation, and Clinical Quality & Compliance committees. He resigned from the Aveanna board effective February 27, 2026, a departure the company disclosed was not the result of any disagreement over operations or policies.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in small and middle-market buyouts, recapitalizations, and growth equity — established companies, not startups or seed rounds.
- Targets three core sectors: consumer (products, brands, retail, packaging), healthcare (services, products, distribution), and specialty manufacturing / business services.
- Typical parameters: portfolio companies with ~$50M–$500M revenue, transaction sizes ~$50M–$500M, and equity checks of ~$25M–$200M.
- Firm philosophy emphasizes long-term equity value creation through cash-flow and earnings growth rather than financial engineering, with active board-level engagement while positioning as a capital partner rather than an operator.
- U.S.-focused; leans on Williams's valuation/corporate-finance background (CIBC, Duff & Phelps) in diligence and value creation.
Notable Investments
- Aveanna Healthcare Holdings (AVAH) — pediatric home care / private-duty nursing platform; J.H. Whitney portfolio company taken public (IPO 2021); Williams served on the board until Feb 2026, and Whitney entities have been trimming (but retaining large) stakes.
- Caris Life Sciences — precision-medicine / molecular diagnostics company; noted among Whitney's higher-profile portfolio names.
- United BioSource Corporation — pharmaceutical/biotech services company (an exit for the firm).
- Alphia — pet-food contract manufacturer; sold by J.H. Whitney to PAI Partners.
- Firebirds Wood Fired Grill — polished-casual restaurant chain; J.H. Whitney invested in March 2023.
- Cooley Group — advanced-materials manufacturer; reported as a J.H. Whitney exit in January 2026.
