Background

Robin Lawson is a Partner at Bridgepoint, working within Bridgepoint Development Capital (BDC), the firm's lower-mid-market arm. He joined Bridgepoint in May 2007 and leads BDC's Technology practice, while also sitting on the wider firm's Technology investment team. His mandate covers buy-outs and growth-capital investments in businesses valued at up to roughly £200 million, with a concentration in the Technology and Media sectors.

Before Bridgepoint, Lawson spent six years in mergers & acquisitions at Rothschild, where he focused on technology, and earlier worked in strategy consulting at LEK. This combination of M&A advisory and strategy-consulting experience underpins his focus on technology platforms and buy-and-build strategies.

Academically, Lawson holds a BA in Economics and Management from the University of Oxford, an MA in Finance and Investment from the University of Exeter, and an MBA with distinction from INSEAD.

In addition to his investing role, Lawson serves as a non-executive director on several of BDC's portfolio companies, including Kerv, IDHL Group and MVF, where he is closely involved in the businesses he has backed. He has also previously sat on the boards of companies such as PEI Media, Inspiring Learning, The Energy Solutions Group, Pulsant and BigHand.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests in established, growing technology and media businesses, not early-stage startups — buy-outs and growth capital rather than seed funding.
  • Targets companies valued at up to ~£200 million, in the UK/European lower-mid-market.
  • Favours scalable platforms and buy-and-build strategies — backing management teams and then supporting acquisitive growth (e.g. Kerv's and IDHL's serial acquisitions).
  • Looks for differentiated, technology-enabled businesses: on IDHL he noted its "connected agency platform enables national businesses to become digital disrupters thanks to its proven multi-skilled and diverse team."
  • Takes an active, hands-on ownership role, typically joining the board as a non-executive director after investing.

Notable Investments

  • Kerv — Tech-services / managed-services group; Bridgepoint took a majority stake (announced Jan 2024), with LDC reinvesting c.£30m; Lawson is a non-executive director. Kerv has since pursued M&A (e.g. acquiring Microsoft Dynamics consultancy Inciper).
  • IDHL Group — Harrogate-based "connected agency" / digital marketing group (240+ staff); BDC made a substantial growth investment (March 2021); Lawson is a non-executive director.
  • MVF — Customer-generation / demand-generation technology business; Lawson serves as a non-executive director.
  • Data Expert — Technology business cited among recent BDC transactions.
  • BigHand — Legal/professional-services software business (prior board involvement).
  • Pulsant — UK data-centre / managed hosting provider (prior exit).
  • PEI Media — B2B media and information business serving private markets (prior exit).
  • The Energy Solutions Group — prior exit.
  • Inspiring Learning — prior portfolio company / board role.
