Background
Rodney Eshelman III is a career private equity investor focused on the lower-middle market. He began in 1998 as an Analyst in the Corporate Finance Division of PaineWebber, working on mergers and acquisitions in the consumer products and retail sectors. In 2000 he joined JPMorgan Partners, where he pursued growth equity, recapitalizations, and buyout investments across business services, consumer, healthcare, and industrial companies. He earned his A.B. with distinction from Duke University in 1998 (economics and history) and an M.B.A. from the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley in 2005.
Eshelman then spent roughly a decade building small-cap private equity platforms. In 2004 he joined Crystal Ridge Partners, and as a Founding Member and Managing Director he originated, executed, and monitored numerous control recapitalizations with founder- and family-owned businesses in business services and light manufacturing. In 2011 he co-founded Alston Capital Partners, another lower-middle-market firm concentrated on business services and specialty manufacturing.
In September 2014 he joined TZP Group in New York as a Partner, where he co-founded TZP Small Cap Partners and served on its Investment Committee. That vehicle was purpose-built to pursue control acquisitions of companies with EBITDA below roughly $10 million — a segment TZP runs on a distinct operational playbook from its flagship funds. Over his career he has served on the boards of more than 15 portfolio companies, including Jam+, Resolvion, The Black Tux, AtData, Logix ITS, Itzy Ritzy, and Head Rush Technologies.
In October 2025, Eshelman joined Gridiron Capital as a Managing Director, focusing on new investment opportunities, due diligence, and value creation at current portfolio companies. Announcing the hire on October 30, 2025, Gridiron Co-Founder and Managing Partner Tom Burger said his "extensive experience and strategic insight will be invaluable as we continue to expand our investment capabilities," and Managing Partner Kevin Jackson cited his "collaborative approach to thematic investing combined with his passion for partnering with entrepreneurial leaders."
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in established, cash-flow-generating lower-middle-market companies, not startups — the "Angel / Seed" label in the source stub does not match his actual profile.
- Control acquisitions and recapitalizations, historically deploying ~$10M–$40M of equity per transaction (TZP Small Cap Partners) into companies with EBITDA under ~$10M.
- Preference for founder- and family-owned businesses where owners retain a significant stake and want an operating-and-financial partner rather than an outright exit.
- Sector concentration in business services, consumer products & services, and specialty/light manufacturing across the U.S. and Canada.
- Emphasis on thematic investing and hands-on value creation — Gridiron leadership highlighted his "collaborative approach to thematic investing" and "passion for partnering with entrepreneurial leaders."
