Roelof Botha

Roelof Botha was born on September 19, 1973 in Pretoria, South Africa, and grew up in Hout Bay near Cape Town. He is a grandson of Pik Botha, South Africa's long-serving apartheid-era foreign minister. He trained as an actuary, earning a BSc in Actuarial Science, Economics and Statistics from the University of Cape Town (1996) — reportedly with the best undergraduate GPA in the university's history — and then an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he graduated as valedictorian. Before business school he spent 1996–1998 as a business analyst at McKinsey & Company in Johannesburg.

Botha is a member of the "PayPal mafia." He joined PayPal around 2000 (initially as Director of Corporate Development, before completing his Stanford MBA), rising to Vice President of Finance and then Chief Financial Officer from September 2001. As CFO he took PayPal public in February 2002 and saw it through its acquisition by eBay in October 2002. It was at PayPal that he first worked with Elon Musk, a company co-founder.

He joined Sequoia Capital as a partner in January 2003, recruited by Sequoia's Michael Moritz after declining to stay on as PayPal's CFO. He took on responsibility for Sequoia's U.S. business in 2017 and, in July 2022, became the firm's Managing Partner and Senior Steward — its top leadership role. He resigned the steward title in November 2025, handing leadership to Alfred Lin and Pat Grady; press accounts noted his tenure helped generate more than $50 billion in profits returned to Sequoia's limited partners. He has been a fixture on the Forbes Midas List of top investors for nearly two decades (ranked as high as #9 in 2021, and #13 in 2025).
