Background
Ron Landthorn is a Columbus, Ohio–based technology executive, venture advisor, and angel-stage investor with more than 27 years in sales management and general management across systems, software, and semiconductors. He earned a BS in Electrical Engineering (with honors) from The Ohio State University and served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. Earlier in his corporate career he held senior roles at Fujitsu Microelectronics, MIPS Computer Systems, and Computer Consoles/ICL. In an unusual mid-career chapter, he stepped away from high tech to turn around, own, and operate a California-based sports car racing school, later serving as CEO of an international motorsports organization with operations in the U.S., Canada, England, and Japan.
From December 2011 to September 2017, Landthorn was Vice President of Venture Development / Venture Programs at Rev1 Ventures (the Columbus-based investor and startup studio formerly known as TechColumbus). In that role he served as a venture advisor to startup clients—bringing specific expertise in sales and business development—and helped drive growth of the Rev1 Labs incubator and related infrastructure projects. Since September 2017 he has continued with Rev1 as a Startup Mentor and Advisor.
In October 2017 he founded Landthorn Technology Consulting, LLC, where he serves as President. The firm provides startup venture-development services including competitive analysis, due diligence, and fundraising support across microelectronics, IT hardware, cloud services, and industrial automation. Alongside this work he has held business-development leadership roles in industry—Global Business Development Director at Abiquo (hybrid cloud management, 2018–2023) and Business Development Director at Oxagile (video streaming/software, since November 2023).
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests and advises at the seed stage, typically with early-stage technology startups in the Midwest ecosystem he knows through Rev1 Ventures.
- Sector emphasis reflects his operating background: enterprise software, hybrid cloud, semiconductors/microelectronics, OTT/SVoD video streaming, industrial automation, and anti-counterfeiting technology.
- Brings a go-to-market and business-development lens—his value-add to founders is sales strategy, strategic partnerships, product management, and fundraising/due-diligence support rather than purely passive capital.
- Looks for founders who can be coached on commercialization; his hands-on incubator and mentor track record signals a preference for high-touch involvement over arm's-length checks.
