Background
Ronald G. Lehman is a graduate of Columbia University (B.A., 1998) and holds FINRA Series 7 and 63 licenses. He has spent essentially his entire career inside the Bruderman family of financial firms and their affiliates, working in investment banking, corporate finance, and principal (private-equity) investing with a concentration in healthcare.
From March 2000 to May 2008, Lehman worked for various Bruderman entities as a buy- and sell-side M&A advisor and as a principal in several private-equity transactions. In 2008 he left to become Senior Vice President of Acquisitions at Health Diagnostics, LLC, then one of the country's fastest-growing diagnostic-imaging providers, where he ran the company's acquisition and corporate-finance activities (per FONAR filings, roughly May 2008–October 2009).
He rejoined Bruderman Brothers around 2009–2010 as Managing Director of Investment Banking, leading the firm's healthcare-services and healthcare-IT deal practice and participating in its merchant-banking investments. Today he is a Partner at Sandy Hill Investors, the private-investment platform chaired by Matthew J. Bruderman, where he "focuses on all aspects of Sandy Hill's activities in the healthcare industry including transaction process management, deal origination, capital sourcing, transaction negotiations, and documentation." Alongside him on the Sandy Hill team are Chairman Matthew J. Bruderman, partner Gerry Eastman, and head of M&A / chief legal officer David Lallouz.
Lehman has also served as a non-employee director of FONAR Corporation (NASDAQ: FONR), the MRI-technology company founded by Raymond Damadian, where he sat on the board and the audit committee.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests as a principal through a merchant-banking model — Sandy Hill positions itself as more than capital: *"We're not just investors — we offer real experience gained through roles as founders, advisors, executives and directors."*
- Provides both equity (minority or majority) and debt capital to "fund growth initiatives or provide liquidity for shareholders."
- Personal specialty is healthcare services and healthcare IT; the broader platform also invests in financial services, industrials, technology, business services, consumer/apparel, and media.
- Targets established companies (roughly $2M–$100M EBITDA) rather than pre-revenue startups; transaction sizes range widely (Sandy Hill cites up to $1B; the Bruderman platform cites ~$500K–$250M).
- Values operating and boardroom involvement — Bruderman's group has "often been the majority shareholder" in its acquisitions and stays closely involved in portfolio companies.
Notable Investments
- FONAR Corporation (NASDAQ: FONR) — MRI scanner manufacturer; Lehman served as a board member and audit-committee member (a governance/investment relationship rather than a venture deal).
- Health Diagnostics, LLC — fast-growing diagnostic-imaging operator where he ran acquisitions/corporate finance (2008–2009); operating role tied to the firm's roll-up strategy.
- Bruderman / Sandy Hill portfolio (broad) — the Bruderman platform reports majority stakes in 80+ companies across consumer products, finance, entertainment, healthcare, and real estate; specific individual deals led by Lehman are not publicly disclosed on the firm's site.
