Background
Ronald E. Weinberg is the founder and an investing partner of Weinberg Capital Group, a Cleveland-based family office that acquires and operates private companies. He grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, earned a B.A. in science from Harvard College, and completed an M.B.A. at Harvard Business School. He began his career on Wall Street before relocating to Cleveland in the mid-1970s to buy into a local investment firm, launching a long career as an entrepreneur and dealmaker that predated the modern "private equity" vocabulary.
Over several decades Weinberg built and exited multiple companies. He was Chairman and CEO of SunMedia Corp. (Sun Newspapers), a publisher of roughly 46 suburban weekly newspapers; Chairman of New West Eyeworks, a ~160-store Phoenix-based retail optical chain that he took public via IPO and later sold; and, most notably, the co-founder, Chairman and CEO of Hawk Corporation. Founded in 1989 with longtime partner Norman C. Harbert, Hawk manufactured friction and brake materials for aerospace, industrial and specialty consumer markets. Under his leadership the company grew from a single plant with $19 million in sales to 16 facilities worldwide with revenues exceeding $400 million, trading publicly (AMEX: HWK, later NYSE) before its all-cash sale in 2010.
Following Hawk's 2010 sale, Weinberg created a family office and continued investing through Weinberg Capital Group, where he remains active both as an investing partner and as a hands-on liaison between portfolio-company boards and management, helping set strategic direction and financial goals. Day-to-day the firm is run alongside Managing Partner Ronald E. "Chip" Weinberg, Jr. and Director Sam J. Heredos.
Beyond investing, Weinberg is a prominent Cleveland civic and philanthropic figure. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Cleveland Clinic, where he has chaired the Research and Education Committee, and is a past Chairman of the Cleveland State University Board of Trustees and a former U.S. Chamber of Commerce board member. In 2018 he and his wife Terri made a $30 million commitment to support research at the Cleveland Clinic's Lerner Research Institute. In 2022 he was recognized in Crain's Cleveland Business's "Eight Over 80."
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Control-oriented, operator's approach: The firm makes "control investments in growth-oriented lower-middle market businesses," and Weinberg stays personally involved in strategy and management rather than acting as a passive check-writer.
- Target size: Established companies with roughly $15M–$100M in revenue and $2M–$10M in EBITDA.
- Sectors: Business services, engineered products, value-added distribution, and consumer products — areas reflecting his industrial/operating background (manufacturing, distribution, retail, media).
- Flexible, family-office capital: The firm states it "leverages highly flexible family office capital to create bespoke structures that meet the unique needs of business owners," and is willing to hold long-term to maximize value rather than work to a fund's fixed timeline.
- Owner- and management-friendly: Favors situations where owners want to reinvest/retain equity and where the existing key management team stays in place, supporting both organic and acquisitive growth.
- Angel/seed context: In aggregator and angel-network listings Weinberg appears as an individual/angel investor; in practice his more documented activity is buyout/growth control investing through the family office.
