Background

Rose Fletcher joined Development Partners International in November 2008 and was made a Partner in 2013. As Chief Financial Officer she is responsible for all financial and tax matters for the firm and its funds. She holds dual South African and British citizenship.

Before DPI, Fletcher held a series of roles in finance, treasury and corporate finance at Old Mutual, working in both the London and South African offices. She was part of the team that completed Old Mutual's acquisition of the £4 billion Skandia insurance group in 2006, where she led the transaction financials and was actively involved in deal structuring and execution. She has also served for several years as Chief Accounting Officer and Company Secretary (previously CFO) of Touchlight Genetics, a British biotechnology company working in DNA technologies, research, manufacturing and genetic medicine.

Fletcher is a qualified Chartered Accountant who trained at Deloitte & Touche in South Africa. She holds a BA (Languages) and two Post Graduate Diplomas — one in Education and one in Accounting — all from the University of Cape Town. She has appeared as a speaker in the CFO/COO track of Informa's SuperReturn private-equity conference series.

Investment Thesis & Focus

DPI, the firm at which Fletcher is CFO and Partner, describes itself as "among Africa's leading international investment and private equity institutions." Its stated approach:

  • Stage & type: Growth equity and private equity in established, expanding pan-African businesses; more recently a dedicated venture capital strategy (DPI Venture Capital).
  • Geography: Africa-wide, targeting companies that benefit from the continent's fast-growing emerging middle class.
  • Sectors: Diversified — financial services/fintech, healthcare, consumer, digital infrastructure and specialty distribution.
  • Dual mandate: DPI aims to deliver "top quartile returns to investors" while realizing positive impact and strong ESG standards across its investments, emphasizing "partnership with investee company management teams."
  • Fletcher's own remit is financial and tax stewardship of the firm and its funds rather than sourcing or leading individual deals; a founder would engage DPI's investment/deal teams for capital.

Notable Investments

  • Moniepoint — Nigerian fintech / business banking platform; a DPI portfolio company and one of Africa's most prominent fintech successes.
  • Alameda Healthcare — Egyptian private hospital group; healthcare platform investment.
  • Pan African Towers — telecom / digital infrastructure (towers) business.
  • Solevo — specialty chemicals distribution business operating across Africa.
