Background

Ruben van Aalst joined Antea Participaties as a Business Analyst on 25 February 2019. In this role he is responsible for assessing investment propositions and preparing company valuations — the analytical groundwork that supports Antea's deal team. Antea itself is a Dutch investment firm founded in 1999 and based in The Hague, and is widely described as a market leader in the independent management of "informal investor" (angel) participation funds in the Netherlands, pooling capital from a network of several hundred informal investors and deploying it into small and mid-sized companies.

Before Antea, Van Aalst built a finance and investment background across both corporate and investment settings. He worked at commercial real-estate services firm CBRE and at infrastructure investment manager DIF, and earlier completed internships at Boer & Croon Corporate Finance and at Tesla — an early-career mix spanning corporate finance, infrastructure investing, and a high-growth technology company.

Academically, Van Aalst studied at the University of Twente (Technische Universiteit Twente), where he pursued International Management and Advanced Technology and earned a Master's degree in Financial Engineering & Management. That quantitative-finance grounding maps directly onto his day-to-day work of valuation and proposition analysis at Antea.

As a business analyst rather than a partner, Van Aalst sits on the analytical/execution side of the firm. Antea's investment decisions and portfolio leadership are driven by its partner group and management ("de directie"), so founders should view him as an entry point into the firm's deal-screening process rather than as the ultimate check-writer.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Not classic seed-stage angel investing. Despite the "informal investor / angel" label attached to Antea, the firm backs established, profitable SMEs — not early-stage startups. It requires "a proven track record, good profitability and growth potential."
  • Stage & structures: Management buy-outs, management buy-ins, growth/expansion financing, and pre-exit arrangements; Antea takes both minority and majority stakes.
  • Check size: Roughly €2M–€7.5M of risk-bearing capital per company (Antea reports on the order of €100M under management, funded by 300+ informal investors).
  • Company size: Revenue ~€7.5M–€100M and EBITDA of at least ~€1.5M.
  • Sectors: Industry/manufacturing, Food, ICT/Media, and Business Services.
  • Geography: Primarily Netherlands-based companies (with some German exposure noted by aggregators).
  • Philosophy — operational freedom: Antea's stated approach is to let entrepreneurs continue to run their own businesses, positioning itself as a capital and governance partner rather than a hands-on operator, and typically targeting an exit in roughly five to seven years.

Notable Investments

  • Fundustry — cited as one of Antea's more recent investments (Antea later exited Fundustry).
  • APOC Aviation — aviation parts/services company, listed among Antea's more recent investments.
  • The Best Social — media/entertainment sector holding.
  • Intertaal — educational publishing company.
  • Alpine Isolatie — insulation/services business.
