Background
Ruben Monballieu is a Partner on Gimv's Sustainable Cities investment platform, one of the firm's five platforms (alongside Consumer, Healthcare, Life Sciences and Smart Industries). He joined Gimv as a Principal in 2016 and was promoted to Partner around June 2019. Gimv is a European investment company with more than 40 years of private-equity experience, listed on Euronext Brussels, managing roughly EUR 1.5 billion of assets.
Before Gimv, Ruben was an Associate Principal at McKinsey & Company, where he advised multinational clients across industries on strategy, M&A and commercial topics. Earlier in his career he interned at the Cabinet of European Commissioner Karel De Gucht at the European Commission. His operating background is reflected in his stated focus areas at Gimv: strategy development, marketing & sales, and corporate finance, particularly in telecom/tech and logistics/e-commerce.
Ruben holds a Master in Applied Economics from KU Leuven (University of Leuven) and an MBA from INSEAD. He is based at Gimv's Antwerp headquarters and, per Gimv convention, invests through his personal management vehicle RMco CommV.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Backs established SMEs with proven market positions and strong growth runway — a growth-capital and buyout investor, not an early-stage/seed or angel backer despite some aggregator listings.
- Deploys sizeable equity (platform capital requirements up to ~EUR 150 million), supporting buy-and-build (add-on M&A), organic expansion, and strategic repositioning.
- Sector lens is the "Sustainable Cities" thesis: modernizing infrastructure, energy transition and sustainable materials, decarbonizing logistics/mobility, and efficiency-driving business services.
- Geographically concentrated on Benelux, France and DACH.
- On what makes him say yes, in his own words on Projective Group: he looked for "a reference in the realization of digital transformation processes in a growing B2B service market," and aimed to "accelerate the company's growth trajectory and engage in buy-and-build activities."
Notable Investments
- Projective Group (Belgium) — digital/change-transformation consultancy for the financial-services sector; Gimv partnered to fund European expansion via buy-and-build. Ruben is the sponsoring Partner; add-on investments of ~EUR 69 million were noted across FY2024–25.
- Itineris (Belgium) — software for energy and water utilities (~550 staff, 2025 revenue >EUR 100m). Gimv invested in 2013 and exited to Cobepa in June 2025, a successful realization that lifted Gimv NAV by just under EUR 1/share; Ruben commented publicly on the exit.
- Fronnt (Belgium) — technical/energy-transition installation-services group being built through buy-and-build (including Lenaerts/LVR and ABN Climatization); a Sustainable Cities portfolio company.
- Sustainable Cities portfolio (platform-level) — other holdings include Acceo (FR), Castelein Sealants (BE), E.GRUPPE (DE), GSDI (FR), Hemink (NL), Techinfra (DE) and Tibbloc (FR).
