Background
Rudy R. Miller is the founder, Chairman, President and CEO of The Miller Group (TMG), a Phoenix/Scottsdale, Arizona-based venture capital, private equity, financial advisory and management consulting firm he established in 1972; the firm celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022. Over his career he has owned, operated, and advised companies ranging from NYSE-listed public corporations to emerging-growth private firms, and he credits his firm with securing more than $5 billion in public and private capital for clients and portfolio companies through debt financing, mergers and acquisitions, and crisis/strategic advisory work.
Miller's operating background is entrepreneurial. He founded Miller Technology & Communications Corporation (MTCC), which he grew into a leading regional technology-training provider that INC. Magazine named one of America's 100 fastest-growing small public companies before an asset sale to an NYSE-listed acquirer. In aviation, he was an early-stage investor and advisor to America West Airlines — helping it move from a business plan to an operating airline and its IPO — and served on its board from 1982 to 1985. In 1986 he founded StatesWest Airlines, serving as Chairman, President and CEO, securing over $135 million in capital and operating it as a USAir Express regional carrier before exiting in 1993 to focus on TMG.
From 2006 to 2012 Miller was Founder and Chairman of Miller Capital Markets, a FINRA-member investment banking firm, and he has served as a certified NASD/FINRA arbitrator for over 20 years. He has held public-company board seats at Jacor Communications (NASDAQ), Comprehensive Care Corporation (NYSE), America West Airlines (NYSE), and Directrix (NASDAQ), and was Vice Chairman-Finance of Ritz-Carlton Magazine. He holds a bachelor's degree and an MBA from Pacific Western University.
Miller is deeply engaged in Arizona civic, veteran, and educational causes. A Vietnam-era veteran (U.S. Army, Army Reserve, and Air Force Reserve) who received a Medal of Merit from President Reagan for Presidential Task Force service, he established the Rudy R. Miller Business-Finance Scholarship at Arizona State University's W.P. Carey School (2008) and served on ASU's Dean's Council of 100. In August 2023 he joined advisory boards at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (College of Aviation and College of Business, Security and Intelligence), funding scholarships and pilot-safety simulator training. In January 2024 he was appointed to the CrossFirst Bank-Arizona advisory board.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Value beyond capital: The firm describes itself as "opportunistic investors" who seek situations where they can add operational, financial, and transactional value — not just write a check. Capital is derived from the firm, its principal, and co-institutional investors.
- Middle-market orientation: Core investments target established middle-market companies across North America, Europe, and Asia, offering "Investment Capital and Fortune 500-level expertise through innovative business strategies."
- Early-stage track record: Miller personally has a documented history as an early-stage investor/advisor (America West Airlines from business plan through IPO), consistent with the angel/seed positioning.
- Full-lifecycle capabilities: Beyond equity, the firm offers strategic and crisis management, business valuations, due diligence, M&A structuring and negotiation, and investor relations — a hands-on, advisory-heavy model.
- Says yes when: there is a strong management team/ownership group willing to partner, and a situation where Miller's transactional, capital-raising, and turnaround expertise can be applied ("determination, perseverance," active partnership with management).
