Background

Ryan Morfin is a Dallas-based investor and financial-services executive best known as founder and managing partner of IronGate Capital Advisors, one of the more active defense-technology venture platforms in the U.S. He grew up outside Gary, Indiana, in the steel-industry region, and originally planned to become a physicist and NASA scientist before turning to Wall Street. He holds a BA in Physics (and Economics) from the University of Chicago (class of ~2002) — the school whose "Maroons" nickname lends its name to his merchant bank, Maroon Capital Group.

Morfin began his career at Morgan Stanley in the CMBS and CRE CDO group and later in the firm's Real Estate Merchant Banking division. He then worked at Countrywide Merchant Banking on its commercial-real-estate expansion before co-founding Maroon Capital Group, a New York-based merchant bank where he covered real estate and defense and advised clients across the U.S., UAE, Serbia, and other frontier and growth markets, specializing in large real-estate restructurings and distressed development projects.

He is best known publicly as the founder and former CEO of Wentworth Management Services (headquartered in Frisco, TX), which he built into one of the largest independent U.S. wealth-management platforms — supporting roughly 2,200 financial advisors and reported to have grown from ~$10M in revenue in 2016 to ~$200M by 2021, ranking among the 20 largest independent U.S. wealth firms before its sale (~2022). Today he is CEO of Lowndes Square (LSQ), an asset-management firm investing family-office capital in non-correlated assets (commercial real estate, private equity, venture), and founder/managing partner of IronGate Capital Advisors (est. 2018).

Morfin is also the host of the Non-Beta Alpha podcast (launched during COVID-19, now in multiple seasons, added to reVolver Podcasts' lineup in 2024), founder of the American Innovation Centers workforce-retraining nonprofit, and active in Republican politics — he served on the Trump Transition Team Finance Committee and has been a donor to Republican candidates and organizations. He supports nonprofits focused on national security, economic growth, and human-capital competitiveness, and sits on the SMU Innovation Council.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests almost entirely in defense and dual-use national-security technology, positioning venture capital as a strategic bridge between startups and the U.S. government.
  • Stated view: *"We are in a tech arms race where speed, innovation, and capital allocation are decisive."*
  • On the firm's role: *"Venture capital must be more than just a source of funding; we must be strategic partners to both our portfolio companies and the government, helping them navigate the complex federal landscape to deliver solutions at the speed of relevance."*
  • Macro rationale: *"Nations achieving primacy in developing advanced technologies will guide geopolitical futures and reap massive economic benefits."*
  • Six IronGate target segments: robotics/unmanned systems/hypersonics; ISR and integrated sensors; cybersecurity; AI, advanced processing & human-machine interface; space; and critical-infrastructure/key-resource protection.
  • Invests across the curve — from seed-stage startups to later-stage growth equity — and emphasizes co-investing alongside leading defense-tech investors; IronGate's platform reports exposure to 500+ defense-tech companies.
  • Through Lowndes Square, also allocates to non-correlated assets (commercial real estate, PE, VC) on behalf of family offices.

Notable Investments

  • Clearspeed — voice-analytics/risk-assessment company; noted as securing a ~$60M Series D round.
  • Skyfi — Earth-intelligence / satellite-imagery platform.
  • Atomic 6 — advanced-materials company (space-armor / radome composite technology).
  • Delta Black — unmanned systems maker (Raider 330 Group 3 drone).
  • (These companies were featured within IronGate's platform/portfolio and its "Strength Through Innovation" summit; IronGate reports fund exposure to 540+ defense-tech companies across two funds.)
