Background
Sabby Mionis (born November 1969) was raised in Athens and holds both Greek and Israeli citizenship. He began his finance career as an account executive at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette Securities. In August 1997 he left DLJ to found his own investment-management business, T.C. Advisors Ltd. — later renamed Capital Management Advisors, Ltd. (CMA) — a Bermuda/Bahamas-based fund-of-hedge-funds and hedge-fund research firm he co-founded with Angelos Metaxa.
Under Mionis, CMA grew to approximately CHF 2.1 billion in assets under management by the end of 2005. In 2006 he and Metaxa sold Capital Management Advisors to Zurich-based private bank EFG International, and Mionis immigrated to Israel from Switzerland that same year. He continued as chief executive of CM Advisers Ltd. — the management company of CMA Global Hedge PCC Limited, a London Stock Exchange-listed investment company that raised roughly USD 402 million in its IPO — until 2009.
After 2009 he founded Global Special Opportunities Ltd. (GSOL), a Bahamas-registered vehicle that has invested in hedge funds, distressed debt, litigation finance and related special-situations opportunities. Company records also show him as a director of Bedrock Private Equity Limited (London) from June 2018 to February 2019. Today he is generally described as an international businessman and philanthropist who invests privately.
Beyond his investment career, Mionis is a prominent philanthropist and Jewish-community leader. He is co-founder of the Israel Center for Better Childhood, a member of the ADL Israel Board, part of the World Executive of the United Israel Appeal, co-chair of the Task Force on Anti-Semitism, and a member of the Board of Governors of the Jewish Agency and of Beit Hatfutsot – the Museum of the Jewish People. He also serves as Chairman of the Israel-Greece Chamber of Commerce and is publicly known for helping expose Greece's Golden Dawn party and for a long-running legal dispute with HSBC/Hervé Falciani over the "Lagarde List."
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Career built on institutional-scale money management: fund-of-hedge-funds, hedge-fund research, distressed debt, litigation finance and special situations, rather than a publicly branded early-stage venture practice.
- Listed in investor databases as an angel investor active at the Seed stage; specific check sizes, mandate and target company profile are not publicly disclosed.
- Deep networks across Israel and Greece (and the broader European/Mediterranean financial world) suggest deal flow tied to those geographies and to his philanthropic and chamber-of-commerce relationships.
- Note: no verified, public record of a named early-stage startup portfolio was found — his documented investing has been through institutional vehicles (CMA, CMA Global Hedge, GSOL).
