Background
Salvatore “Sal” DeTrane is the founder and Managing Partner of Empactful Capital, a healthcare-focused venture firm formed in 2016 by veteran healthcare operators and investors. Empactful describes itself as investing in proven, rapidly growing technology companies that help incumbent healthcare organizations address strategic opportunities and financially pressing problems.
Before Empactful, DeTrane co-founded Nucleus Partners in late 2001 as a venture capital and catalyst firm for seed and early-stage technology companies. Empactful’s biography says he pioneered a “working engagement” diligence model there and led Nucleus’ investment in MedeAnalytics, a healthcare analytics company he later helped operate for 12 years as the company’s number-two executive.
At MedeAnalytics, DeTrane gained direct P&L and operating experience and helped drive growth in hospital and payer markets. Empactful states that MedeAnalytics grew from $3 million to more than $120 million in revenue and was acquired by Thoma Bravo in 2015 as it prepared for an IPO. Earlier in his career, he co-managed nearly $50 million of committed capital at The Angels’ Forum after building a technology investment-banking practice in Silicon Valley.
DeTrane earned a B.S. in Business Administration with an accounting emphasis from Temple University in 1993, graduating summa cum laude according to Empactful. Temple’s Fox School of Business lists him on its Board of Visitors as Managing Director & Founder of Empactful Capital and a member of the Temple University Leadership Council.
