Background

Sam Gaddis is a serial software founder and operator based in Austin, Texas, whose career has centered on building, scaling, and exiting software companies. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Texas, and early in his career collaborated with UT researchers on published studies about personality and online behavior. He is best known in the Austin tech scene as one of the co-founders of Mutual Mobile.

Founded in 2009 by five University of Texas graduates, Mutual Mobile grew into one of the leading mobile app development firms of the early iPhone era, producing award-winning work for clients like Google, Audi, and Cisco. Gaddis served as the company's Chief Marketing Officer. The firm scaled to roughly 300 employees and more than $26M in revenue, and was named by Forbes as one of "America's Most Promising Companies" in 2011 before its eventual acquisition.

In 2016 Gaddis co-founded Jog.ai (with Ed Ireson), an Austin-based speech-analytics and natural-language platform that recorded, transcribed, and made phone conversations searchable — well ahead of the wave of AI meeting-summary products. Jog.ai was acquired in April 2019 by Wayne, PA-based cloud services company Evolve IP, in what was Evolve IP's 15th acquisition. (His [hidden] address dates to this venture.)

Today Gaddis co-founds and operates Runpoint (Runpoint Partners), which builds custom AI-native business software and works on "AI ops/growth for PE." He argues that "AI has made custom systems cheap enough that the old buy-versus-build calculation no longer holds," and he keynotes on AI economics, AI-native talent, and the rise of "operator-engineers." On the side he owns Austin Custom CNC, a fabrication shop working in wood, metal, and stone, which he calls "a useful corrective to software abstraction."

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests as an angel at the seed stage, deploying personal capital into early-stage software companies in exchange for equity.
  • Sector focus on software, AI, and business/productivity tools — consistent with his own operating background in mobile, speech/NLP, and AI-native custom software.
  • Draws on an operator's lens: his public thesis at Runpoint is that AI has collapsed the cost of building custom software, shifting the "buy-vs-build" calculus — a view that signals interest in AI-native tooling and "operator-engineer" teams.
  • Speaks frequently about AI, Claude Code, and the changing economics of software, suggesting he leans toward founders building at the intersection of applied AI and practical business workflows.

Notable Investments

  • Roikoi — business/productivity software company; recorded angel investment (October 2015).
  • Jog.ai — co-founder/operator (not a passive angel deal); speech-analytics startup acquired by Evolve IP in 2019.
  • *(Public databases record a limited angel portfolio; his most significant "bets" have been as a founder/operator rather than as a check-writer.)*
