Background

Samuel "Sam" Powell is a Partner at Gamut Capital Management, a New York–based private equity firm founded in 2015 by Stan Parker and Jordan Zaken (both formerly senior investors at Apollo Global Management). Gamut pursues value-oriented, often contrarian control investments in middle-market companies, structuring across the equity and debt capital structure. Powell joined the firm in 2019 and was promoted to Partner on January 4, 2023, alongside James Shanahan (Partner) and Ryan Brady and Brian Gramolini (Principals). As a Partner he is responsible for all aspects of leading an investment and serves as a sector lead for Business Services, Consumer/Retail, and TMT / tech-enabled services.

Before Gamut, Powell was a Principal at Silver Lake Partners, the technology-focused private equity firm, where he worked on private-equity investments. Earlier in his career he was an Associate at Lightyear Capital, a financial-services–focused private equity firm, and he began in the Investment Banking Division of Deutsche Bank. This path gives him a background spanning bulge-bracket M&A advisory, financial-services buyouts, and large-cap technology private equity before moving into Gamut's middle-market strategy.

Powell holds a BSE in Operations Research and Financial Engineering from Princeton University. He has taken active board roles at Gamut portfolio companies, having served on the boards of JPW Industries and Extreme Reach (XR), and currently sits on the boards of Extreme Reach (XR) and DEX Imaging.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests through control and control-like buyouts of established middle-market companies — not venture, seed, or angel deals.
  • Typical equity commitments in the ~$50M–$150M range; Gamut manages $3B+ in assets, with Fund II at ~$719M (2022 vintage).
  • Gamut positions itself as a flexible, value-oriented and contrarian investor able to structure "control and control-like investments across every part of a company's equity and debt capital structure," emphasizing downside protection and creative deal structuring.
  • Powell's personal sector coverage: Consumer/Retail, TMT, and tech-enabled/business services, complementing the firm's broader reach into industrials, automotive, and building products.
  • Value-creation approach leans on operational improvement, management partnership, and proprietary/complex deal flow rather than momentum or growth-stage bets.

Notable Investments

  • Extreme Reach (XR) — advertising/creative-asset technology and workflow platform; Gamut portfolio company where Powell serves on the board.
  • DEX Imaging — provider of managed print services; acquired by Gamut in partnership with the Doyle family from Staples (announced April 2024). Powell sits on the board.
  • JPW Industries — maker of tools and industrial equipment (brands such as JET and Wilton); Gamut portfolio company where Powell previously served as a director.
  • Airtron — HVAC installation and services business; added to Gamut's portfolio (reported September 2024).
