Background
Samuel Tang is a Co-Founder and Managing Partner of the Montauk TriGuard Funds, a California-based private equity investment management firm specializing in secondary-market liquidity solutions. He founded Montauk TriGuard Management in 1999 and TriGuard Management LLC in 2004, and has served as Managing Partner of both since their formation. The firm manages a series of funds (Montauk TriGuard Funds III through IX, plus the Montauk Partners vehicles) and has managed on the order of approximately $1 billion dedicated to private equity secondaries.
Prior to co-founding Montauk TriGuard, Tang was Managing Director, Equities at Pacific Life, where he co-developed the Equities group's "tri-level" investment approach aimed at reliable, attractive returns and co-managed the firm's private equity portfolio. He also co-chaired the group's Workout Committee, which focused on recovery of distressed bond investments, and handled strategic and direct equity investments. Before Pacific Life, he was a Managing Partner at The Shidler Group, a specialized private equity firm focused on finance, insurance, and real estate companies — several of which became publicly traded.
Tang holds an MBA in Finance from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and a BS in Accounting from the University of Southern California (USC). He has served on a number of private equity fund advisory, corporate, and charitable boards. His longtime partners at the firm include co-founders Ronn Cornelius and Brian Smith, alongside principals Eric Becker (CFO) and Sean Gessay (CCO), forming a team with extensive Pacific Life and institutional-investment lineage.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests through the private equity secondary market, purchasing limited partnership interests in existing PE funds rather than making primary investments in operating companies.
- Targets "underwriting-oriented" secondaries — LP positions that are at least ~50% funded so the underlying portfolio can be quantified and underwritten, reducing blind-pool risk.
- Pursues a stated "niche / value-add liquidity" strategy focused on three underserved segments of the secondaries market, including tertiary liquidity (secondaries within a secondary fund) and consortia carve-outs alongside leading secondary funds.
- Positions the firm as a counterparty providing liquidity solutions to fund managers and LPs seeking exits, emphasizing complex or overlooked situations.
- Personal expertise and prior deal history are concentrated in finance, insurance, and real estate, reflecting his Shidler Group and Pacific Life background.
Notable Investments
- Montauk TriGuard Funds (III–IX) — successive secondaries funds launched since 1999, executing the firm's underwriting-oriented LP-interest strategy.
- Montauk Partners / Montauk Partners II — additional fund vehicles managed by the team.
- TriGuard Management LLC — the SEC-registered adviser (founded 2004) providing advisory services to the Montauk TriGuard fund family, collectively managing roughly $1 billion in PE secondaries.
