Background
Sandra A. C. Glasgow is one of the founders and the operating manager of First Angels Jamaica (FAJ), Jamaica's first formal angel investor network, which she co-founded in 2014 with businessman Joseph M. Matalon (chairman) and American angel investor John "JJ" Geewax. The network was incorporated in mid-2014 and officially launched on April 22, 2015, and in 2024 was rebranded as First Angels Caribbean to reflect a regional expansion. FAJ is managed by Glasgow's own consulting firm, BizTactics Limited, which she founded and leads as Managing Director, mentoring growth-aspiring firms and promoting corporate governance across the Caribbean.
Glasgow holds a Bachelor of Science in Applied Zoology and Applied Botany and a Master of Business Administration specialising in the Management of Technology, both from the University of the West Indies, Mona. She spent roughly two decades at the University of Technology, Jamaica (formerly CAST), rising to Senior Vice President for Corporate Services and founding its Technology Innovation Centre and Entrepreneurial Centre. She launched the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) Jamaica project (2005–2007) and served as Chief Executive Officer of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) from 2007 to 2013, later working as consultant General Manager of the Jamaica Exporters' Association.
She was Jamaica's Eisenhower Fellow in 2000 — a fellowship she used to study business incubation and angel investing in the United States — and now sits on the Eisenhower Fellowships' Global National Council. In 2019 she was appointed a Senator representing Jamaica at the World Business Angels Investment Forum (WBAF), and she has served as Vice President of the Latin America & Caribbean Association for Business Angels (LACABAN). In 2021 she was named among the top 50 Caribbean Women in Technology, and in 2023 she was appointed Honorary Consul for the Republic of Suriname in Jamaica.
Beyond investing, Glasgow is a prolific corporate director, serving on the boards of NCB Financial Group Limited and National Commercial Bank Jamaica Limited, Stanley Motta Limited, Medical Disposables & Supplies Limited, and technology ventures including DRT Communications Limited and SiFi Studios Jamaica, as well as public and non-profit bodies such as the Students' Loan Bureau and the National Crime Prevention Fund (Crime Stop).
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests through First Angels as a member-driven network of ~30 prominent Jamaican business owners and companies, targeting early-stage, privately held ventures.
- Sector emphasis on digital applications, digital media, creative industries, and other innovative businesses — with a strong preference for companies that export their products or services.
- On the export focus, in her own words: *"When we invest in companies, these companies are exporting their services or products and we want to have investors in those markets that can help to mentor and connect them within the marketplace."*
- No set fund pool or fixed cheque size: *"The level of investment is generally dependent on how much is being requested, and how much each angel wants to risk on each investment."* Angels may invest in later tranches as ventures hit milestones.
- Values hands-on mentorship and connections (not just capital) — the network deliberately recruits diaspora/overseas members who can open doors in target export markets.
- Rigorous, selective process: FAJ has reviewed 250+ applications and hosted 14+ pitch events, funding only a small fraction — signalling a high bar on due diligence and founder quality.
Notable Investments
- BookFusion — E-book reading and publishing platform; FAJ's first-round investment (~2015–2016), used to improve its e-reader and build new apps; repeatedly cited by First Angels as its flagship success story.
- Cold Bush (Coldbush) Organics — Family-run Jamaican organic cocoa/food-products company; FAJ invested around October 2018, helping expand cultivation from an initial 5 acres to 50 acres at its Mount Pleasant farm (later attracted VM Investments private-equity backing).
- DRT Communications Limited — Media/communications venture (whose MD, Danielle Terrelonge, also serves as a First Angels director).
- Per PitchBook, First Angels Caribbean has made roughly 11 investments across food products, publishing, and B2B media/information services.
