Background
Sandy Muirhead is a co-founder of Phoenix Equity Partners, a London-based mid-market private equity firm established in 2001 alongside Hugh Lenon, James Thomas, David Burns and Kevin Keck. He served as a Managing Partner and stepped down from that executive role in 2014, after which he continued with the firm as a Senior Adviser. He remains a member of Phoenix's investment activity, particularly leading and advising on financial-services sector deals, and has done so since the firm's founding.
His early career was in finance and accounting: he read Chemistry at the University of Oxford (MA) and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Price Waterhouse in 1979. He then spent roughly 15 years in international investment banking before moving into private equity from January 1996, ahead of co-founding Phoenix.
At Phoenix, Muirhead has concentrated on the financial-services vertical, sitting on the boards of portfolio companies including Mobius Life (investment administration for UK pension schemes) and Redington (institutional investment consultancy). One of his signature outcomes was the sale of Key Retirement Group (KRG) to Partners Group for £208 million in 2019, which delivered a return of approximately 4.5x Phoenix's invested cost.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests through Phoenix's mid-market PE strategy — control/growth positions in established, founder-led UK and European businesses, not early-stage angel/seed cheques.
- Personal specialism is financial services: pensions, insurance-adjacent platforms, and investment/advisory businesses (Mobius Life, Redington, Key Retirement Group).
- Looks for firms with strong client reputations and clear expansion runway. On Redington: *"Over the last few years, Redington has built an enviable reputation by delivering exceptional client service… we look forward to supporting Mitesh and all his team."*
- Focused on scaling proven models. On Mobius Life: *"We see a clear opportunity for Mobius Life to increase its penetration of the institutional pension market and broaden its product offering."*
- Value creation is judged on LP returns. On the KRG exit: *"We are delighted with the strong growth that KRG has achieved during our ownership period, and with the excellent return we have generated for our LPs on this investment."*
