Background
Sanjiv Sharan is an Indian public-sector banker who rose through the ranks of Punjab National Bank, one of India's largest state-owned commercial banks. He served at senior levels within PNB — including as a Field/Chief General Manager — before being elevated to Executive Director (ED) of the bank, a board-level statutory post appointed by the Government of India.
His tenure became significant in the context of the Punjab National Bank fraud that came to light in early 2018, in which jeweller Nirav Modi and associates allegedly defrauded the bank of more than ₹13,000 crore (roughly US$2 billion) through fraudulent Letters of Undertaking (LoUs) issued via the SWIFT messaging system, exploiting the fact that SWIFT was not integrated with the bank's Core Banking System (CBS).
In May 2018, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) named Sanjiv Sharan in a charge sheet filed in the City Civil and Sessions Court, Mumbai, alleging that he and other senior executives "failed to implement" several Reserve Bank of India circulars and cautionary notices on reconciling SWIFT with the core banking system and did not take "any meaningful corrective measures." Following the charge sheet, the PNB board divested him of his financial and executive powers, and the government subsequently granted the CBI sanction to prosecute him.
On 18–20 January 2019, India's Ministry of Finance removed both Sanjiv Sharan and fellow Executive Director K. V. Brahmaji Rao from office, effective immediately, citing lapses connected to the fraud. Public records of his career after the removal are limited.
