Background

Wang Sanshou was born on June 1, 1981 in Chifeng, Inner Mongolia. He is an unconventional, largely self-taught entrepreneur: rather than completing a university degree, he spent roughly 2002–2005 self-studying at the National Library of China while supporting himself through internships and junior roles at institutions including McKinsey and the research institute of China's Ministry of Commerce. He often recounts a period of extreme frugality (living on about 3 yuan a day of food) and the collapse of his father's business as formative experiences that shaped his focus on cash-flow discipline.

At age 25 in 2006 he founded Handing Consulting (汉鼎咨询), a third-party firm providing pre-IPO advisory services to companies preparing to list. The business rose to prominence when China's ChiNext (创业板) board opened in 2009 — reportedly close to half of the ~108 candidate companies used Handing's services. Around 2010–2011, inspired (by his own account) after reading Michael Bloomberg's autobiography, Wang pivoted entirely into big data, reinvesting his consulting earnings to build Jusfoun Big Data.

Jusfoun Big Data Information Group was established in 2010 (in Beijing) and turned profitable around 2013–2014 (roughly 80 million yuan in 2014 revenue). Wang built the company around enterprise and government data — an early database of tens of thousands of listed/reserve companies that grew to cover millions of enterprises — and positioned it at the intersection of big data and finance. Jusfoun became a founding shareholder (reportedly ~22%, the second-largest holder after the Guizhou provincial government) of the Guiyang Big Data Exchange (GBDEx), launched in 2015 as China's first big-data trading exchange, where Wang served as executive president/CEO. He was widely nicknamed the "Data King" and participated in drafting national big-data standards and the "13th Five-Year Plan" big-data guidance.

By 2018 Jusfoun had completed A/B/C/D funding rounds — early angel backing (2012) from IDG Capital and Boxin (Bozhong) Capital, a ~200-million-yuan (≈$32M) Series A in January 2015 (IDG, Detong, Boxin), further rounds through 2015–2018, and a Series D that reportedly pushed its valuation to about 11.1 billion yuan (~$1.65B), earning it "unicorn" status. However, from ~2020 onward the company faced scrutiny (reports of shell/dormant subsidiaries), an IPO that never materialized, and Wang personally fell into serious legal and financial difficulty (see Recent Activity below).

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Core conviction — "data as an asset": Wang pioneered the idea in China that enterprise and government data can be productized, valued, traded, and operated as an asset class. His model was to aggregate and clean large-scale enterprise/government data, then monetize it via analytics platforms and exchange-based trading (GBDEx).
  • Sector focus: big data, government/public-sector data applications, data-asset operations, and data-driven financial services (bank lending, wealth-management distribution, internet finance, securities). Clients centered on government bodies, commercial banks, and financial institutions.
  • Stage: categorized in angel/seed investor databases as an early-stage backer; in practice his documented activity is as a founder/operator and as a strategic (often government-JV) shareholder rather than a broad personal angel portfolio.
  • Geography: overwhelmingly China-focused, with heavy use of local-government partnerships and government-guidance-fund capital.
  • What made him "say yes" (as a founder raising and partnering): deals that paired data assets with government relationships and near-term monetization; Jusfoun reportedly drew backing from 40+ state-owned, local-government guidance-fund, and industrial-capital investors.

Notable Investments

  • Jusfoun Big Data (九次方大数据) — Founder/CEO; the enterprise big-data platform he built from 2010, reaching a reported ~11.1B-yuan (~$1.65B) valuation by 2018.
  • Guiyang / Global Big Data Exchange (GBDEx, 贵阳大数据交易所) — Founding shareholder (via Jusfoun, ~22%) and executive president; China's first big-data exchange, launched 2015.
  • Qunxing Toys (群兴玩具, SZ:002575) — Became actual controller of this Shenzhen-listed company as part of an attempted backdoor/reverse-listing of his data business (the listing ultimately failed).
  • Numerous local-government joint-venture subsidiaries — Jusfoun set up many regional data-company JVs with municipal/provincial governments (e.g., "big data asset management" entities); some were later reported to be dormant or shell-like.
