Background
Sarah Woelfel is Co-Founder and Partner of CULT Capital, a New York–based investment firm she launched in 2014 (alongside co-founder John Kenney) to back "cult" consumer brands — companies she describes as selling a lifestyle and a loyal following, not just products. A Florida native, she has been based in New York since 2008. She studied Economics and Classical Civilization at Duke University, graduating in 2008.
Before founding CULT Capital, Woelfel built her investing career on both the buy side and in banking. She served on the investment team at Audax Group (a Boston-based private equity firm) and worked earlier as an investment-banking analyst at Deutsche Bank. She frames her approach as bridging the analytical and the intuitive: "I had always loved being an investor. My mind goes to both the quantitative side of things as well as the qualitative side of things."
In co-founding CULT Capital, Woelfel combined that investing background with a personal affinity for cult consumer brands, aiming to build a firm dedicated to brands that "hyper-connect with their audience and offer something the world truly needs." She has said the firm was "specifically designed... to be differentiated in the VC growth equity space," and that she and her partners are "really set on creating a new and different investor paradigm." Since founding, she has overseen investments across beauty, personal care, food/beverage, home, pet, and wellness, and she has taken board seats at portfolio companies including Act+Acre, Miyoko's Creamery, and Supergoop!.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in "cult brands": brands that "do not just sell products but create a lifestyle and a loyal, almost fanatical, following." CULT looks for companies it considers "rare, remarkable and capable of changing the world."
- Growth-stage, post-revenue: targets emerging consumer companies with roughly $2M+ in annual revenue seeking growth capital of up to ~$10M — meaningfully later than the "seed" label in the source stub.
- Consumer categories only: beauty & personal care, food & beverage, homecare/household, pet, wellness, and fashion/leisure.
- Founder-partnership model: the thesis is "about partnering with founders to aid their vision and help them scale while staying true to their core values," using a five-stage process — immersion, alignment, growth, optimization, and exit.
- What makes her say yes: brands with a genuine, hyper-engaged community and an authentic lifestyle proposition — she saw the opportunity "to build a firm dedicated to these unique consumer brands that hyper-connect with their audience."
