Background
Šarūnas Alekna is a Partner at BaltCap, the largest private equity and venture capital investor in the Baltic region, working out of the firm's Vilnius office. He joined BaltCap in 2010 as an Investment Director and was promoted to Partner in October 2021 on the strength of his track record with the firm's buyout funds, at which point BaltCap's partnership expanded to 11 members (he was promoted alongside Eneken Napa of the Tallinn office).
Before BaltCap, Alekna held corporate finance and sell-side advisory roles at Deloitte and at Suprema/Evli (Evli Bank), where he worked on M&A and capital markets transactions across the Baltic region. He holds a Master's in Finance from London Business School (2005–2006).
He was drawn to private equity, in his own words, for the chance to "take full responsibility of the entire transaction rather than providing advice on separate steps," and he values that in PE "all stakeholders are fully aligned on one thing – increasing the value of portfolio companies." Over his BaltCap career he has drawn on the firm's experience of 100+ investments to improve portfolio-company operations.
Beyond deal-making, Alekna is an industry leader in the Baltic PE ecosystem: at the LT VCA general meeting on 29 March 2018 he was elected Chairman of the Lithuanian Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (a two-year board term). He has also served as Chairman of the Supervisory Board for several BaltCap portfolio companies, including Kelprojektas, FCR Media, Ecoservice and BPT Real Estate.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests through BaltCap's buyout funds — control/majority positions in established Baltic mid-market companies, not seed or angel deals.
- Looks for management teams with "championship ambitions" and backs them to win in their markets.
- Emphasizes value creation across key business drivers: digitization, sales excellence, capital efficiency, and ESG/sustainable performance.
- Known for entrepreneurial ownership of the full transaction lifecycle and for driving operational improvement using lessons from BaltCap's 100+ investments.
- Sector-agnostic within the mid-market, but with deep hands-on experience in logistics, environmental services, food processing, media, and flexible office space.
Notable Investments
- Ecoservice — leading Lithuanian waste/environmental management company; Alekna led the investment and its exit (BaltCap agreed to sell Ecoservice to Eco Baltia).
- Eesti Keskkonnateenused (EKT) — leading Estonian waste management company; a "solid exit" cited in his promotion to Partner.
- Krekenavos Agrofirma — major Lithuanian meat processing company (acquired by BaltCap alongside Mėsa LT); current portfolio.
- Delamode Group — logistics/freight forwarding group; current portfolio involvement.
- Workland — flexible/serviced office space provider in the Baltics; current portfolio.
- FCR Media — digital marketing and media/directories business; current portfolio; also chaired its supervisory board.
- BPT Real Estate — real estate business; earlier portfolio company he worked on before exit.
- Kelprojektas — engineering/infrastructure design firm; served as Supervisory Board Chairman.
