Background
Scott Duncan is a co-founder, partner, and managing director of BaseRock Partners, a Denver-based investment bank founded to serve exclusively the engineering and construction industry. He brings more than 20 years of financial-advisory experience, including roughly 15 years focused exclusively on construction and construction-materials M&A. His transaction experience spans general building contractors, heavy-civil contractors, and a wide range of specialty contractors, along with construction-materials producers across cement, aggregates, ready-mix concrete, hot-mix asphalt, and integrated paving.
Before co-founding BaseRock Partners, Scott spent years as a Managing Director at FMI Capital Advisors, Inc. — FMI Corporation's registered investment-banking subsidiary — where he co-managed the firm's construction-materials group. FMI, founded in 1953 and headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina, is a leading provider of management consulting, investment banking, and research to the built environment. During his tenure he was described as a director advising construction-company owners on financial strategy, mergers and acquisitions, valuations, and ownership-transfer/succession issues, and reportedly managed more than $1 billion in construction-industry M&A transactions over the course of a decade.
Earlier in his career, Scott directed corporate strategy and mergers and acquisitions for Lafarge North America (now part of Holcim) in the Western United States, giving him an operator's perspective on the building-materials sector he now advises. He is a frequent speaker at industry conferences — including for the Construction Financial Management Association (CFMA) — on M&A, valuation, ownership transfer, and construction-materials market outlooks.
Scott holds an MBA from the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver and a Bachelor of Arts from Denison University. He is based in the Denver metropolitan area (Broomfield, Colorado).
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Operates as a sell-side M&A and ownership-transition advisor, not a venture/angel investor — he helps owners of construction and materials businesses sell, recapitalize, or transfer ownership (including ESOPs and internal management buyouts).
- Deep, exclusive specialization in the engineering and construction vertical: building materials, construction and industrial services, and architecture & engineering.
- Particular expertise in construction materials — cement, aggregates, ready-mix concrete, hot-mix asphalt, and integrated paving firms — plus heavy/civil and specialty contracting.
- Targets privately held and mid-market companies, frequently working alongside private-equity buyers and strategic industry acquirers.
- Values-based framing from BaseRock: an investment bank "dedicated exclusively to serving the engineering and construction industry," emphasizing deep industry relationships and helping owners make their companies "valuable" and transferable.
