Background

Scott Himmelberger is a climate-technology investor who spent his career at the intersection of materials science, energy policy, and growth-stage venture investing. He holds a PhD and an MS in Materials Science & Engineering from Stanford University (completed roughly 2010–2015) and a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Davis. His doctoral research was in materials science, and he has an academic publication record from his time at Stanford.

He began his professional career on the tech-to-market team at ARPA-E, the U.S. Department of Energy's agency for funding disruptive energy technologies, where he helped launch an investment program supporting advanced batteries and next-generation fuel cells. He then joined Boston Consulting Group (BCG) as a Project Leader and core member of the firm's North American energy practice.

At Princeville Capital — a global, technology-focused growth-equity firm founded in 2015 — Himmelberger held the role of Vice President and later Principal, where he led sourcing and deal execution for Princeville's Climate Technology Fund. That fund invests in growth-stage companies reducing emissions across advanced mobility, next-generation energy, carbon management, and digital/industrial transformation. (Notably, Princeville Climate's reported sole limited partner is Leonardo DiCaprio.) His firm email remains on the pvglobal.com (Princeville Global) domain.

More recently, Himmelberger moved to Decarbonization Partners — the joint venture between BlackRock and Temasek that closed its inaugural ~$1.4B fund in 2024 — where he works as a Principal/Director on investment sourcing, underwriting, execution, and portfolio management. He currently serves on the board of Antora Energy, a thermal-energy-storage company.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests in growth-stage technology companies, not seed/angel rounds — Princeville targets businesses with "the scale, economics, and defensibility to become global leaders within three to five years."
  • Climate/decarbonization is his personal specialty: emissions-reducing companies across advanced mobility, next-generation energy, carbon management, and digital/industrial transformation.
  • Princeville's broader strategy spans the AI and software value chain — AI-native platforms and infrastructure, enterprise software, fintech, e-commerce/marketplaces, and digital health — through its Princeville Global fund (Princeville Global III is ~$750M).
  • Adds value through active board involvement, capital-markets expertise, and global expansion support (Princeville operates across the US, Europe, and Asia).
  • At Decarbonization Partners, the mandate is commercial-scale climate tech — companies that can accelerate decarbonization across industry while delivering venture-grade returns.

Notable Investments

  • Antora Energy — zero-carbon industrial heat & power via thermal energy storage; Decarbonization Partners led Antora's $150M Series B, and Himmelberger sits on its board.
  • Enpal — German residential solar / clean-energy platform; reported Princeville Climate Technology portfolio company (investment circa January 2023).
  • Ascend Elements — lithium-ion battery materials and recycling; Decarbonization Partners fund portfolio company.
  • Group14 Technologies — silicon-carbon battery materials; Decarbonization Partners fund portfolio company.
  • Monolith — clean hydrogen and carbon-black production; Decarbonization Partners fund portfolio company.
  • (Princeville Global's broader portfolio has also included companies such as Immutable and Cainiao, on the software/AI side of the firm.)
