Background

Scott Ketner is a Partner and Senior Advisor at Berkshire Capital (which operates internationally as Berkshire Global Advisors), an independent, employee-owned boutique investment bank founded in 1983 that specializes in M&A within the financial services industry. He joined Berkshire in 2005 and brings more than 40 years of industry experience. At the firm he has headed the wealth management advisory practice and is active in new business generation, focusing on the wealth management sector in the Southeast US as well as the trust and accounting sub-sectors.

Before Berkshire, Ketner built a career in financial-institutions corporate finance and M&A on Wall Street. Most recently prior to joining Berkshire, he co-headed the Financial Institutions Group at ING Barings. Earlier he ran the Insurance Industry Group at Oppenheimer & Co., and before that worked as a Managing Director in the Financial Institutions Group at Lehman Brothers. His expertise spans corporate finance and M&A across the asset management and insurance industries.

Ketner earned a BA (in History) from Yale College and an MBA from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Though he brings extensive New York experience, he is now based in Florida and concentrates on the Southeast US market.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Operates as an M&A advisor/investment banker, not a check-writing seed investor — he represents buyers and sellers in transactions rather than taking angel stakes.
  • Sector concentration: wealth management, asset management, insurance, and trust/accounting businesses.
  • Deal types: sell-side and buy-side M&A, recapitalizations, management buyouts, and financing arrangements for wealth-management firms.
  • Geographic emphasis on the Southeast US wealth-management market.
  • Berkshire Capital positions itself as a leading global boutique focused exclusively on financial-services M&A, and Ketner's mandate reflects that specialization.

Notable Investments

  • Argent Financial / Argent Trust — advised Argent on its acquisition of TMI Holdings; also advised Argent's board on a recapitalization.
  • Warren Averett (wealth management subsidiary) — arranged financing for the management buyout of the wealth-management arm.
  • Capital One / Hibernia Bank — advised Capital One on the sale of the wealth-management operations of Hibernia Bank.
  • Broader deal sheet reportedly includes work touching firms such as Hightower Advisors and Hancock Whitney, reflecting 25+ significant financial-services M&A transactions.
