Background
Scott Lopano is a Partner at Tech Square Ventures (TSV), an Atlanta-based early-stage venture firm and one of the most active seed investors in the U.S. Southeast (roughly $90M in assets under management across its flagship funds and the Engage program). He works alongside founder and Managing Partner Blake Patton, Partner Bill Nussey, and General Partner Vasant Kamath. Lopano leads TSV's investment team and co-investment network and oversees the firm's internship and EIR (entrepreneur-in-residence) programs.
He joined Tech Square Ventures in 2017 as an associate — the firm's first dedicated investment-team hire — and was instrumental in building out TSV's investment process and infrastructure. He was also central to launching Engage, Atlanta's enterprise innovation platform and fund that connects large corporations (partners have included AT&T, Chick-fil-A, Cox Enterprises, Delta, Georgia-Pacific, Georgia Power, The Home Depot, UPS, Goldman Sachs, and Invesco) with B2B startups. He has led or supported diligence and execution on 50+ new investments across the firm's funds, focused on early-stage enterprise and marketplace technology. He was promoted to Partner, profiled in Hypepotamus's "Meet the Investor" series in March 2024.
Before venture capital, Lopano spent about four years in the Investment Banking division at UBS in New York, where he covered insurance and banking clients and advised on capital structure and funding strategy — helping clients raise more than $26B in debt and preferred-stock capital.
He earned his degree in Finance from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, where he was also a four-year starting punter/kicker for Penn football (holding school records for punts and punt yardage) before pursuing a finance career after NFL tryouts. Beyond TSV, he has served on the board of Venture Atlanta and is active in the Atlanta startup community (including as an Atlanta Tech Village mentor).
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests primarily at the seed / early stage in B2B (enterprise software) and marketplace technology companies; TSV describes itself as broadly sector-agnostic with focus themes in applied AI, logistics/supply chain, vertical solutions, infrastructure & productivity, and sustainability/energy.
- Typical initial checks of ~$500K–$3M, backing "category-defining companies led by visionary entrepreneurs inventing better ways for enterprises to operate."
- Emphasizes helping founders access "the two most elusive things: capital and customers," leaning on TSV's Engage corporate network to connect startups with large enterprise buyers.
- Strong regional lens: TSV is one of the most active early-stage funds in the Southeast, with a home base in Atlanta.
