Background
Scott Walchek is a San Francisco Bay Area–native serial technology entrepreneur and angel investor with more than 30–35 years of experience building, funding, and exiting software companies. Early in his career he held roles connected to Sun Microsystems and Macromedia; following Macromedia's 1993 IPO he became CEO of the publicly traded interactive media developer/publisher Sanctuary Woods, an affiliate label of Electronic Arts. In 1996 he founded an early consumer e-commerce technology company, which he sold to Inktomi (a leading pre-Google search provider) in 1998, where he then served as head of e-commerce.
Walchek is best known in venture circles for co-leading the seed investment in Baidu, China's dominant search engine, serving as a director until the company's landmark IPO in August 2005. He founded Integrity Partners LLC, a boutique VC fund, and was also a Venture Partner at ePlanet Capital. In 2008 he founded DebtMarket, an electronic consumer-debt trading platform, and sold it to Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) in 2011. By his own account he has raised over $130 million across public markets, private investors, and VCs, and has started and successfully exited multiple tech startups.
In 2012 he founded Trōv, a San Francisco–based insurtech that pioneered on-demand, item-level insurance and later pivoted to APIs and embedded-insurance software enabling insurers and insurtechs to grow recurring revenue. He served as Founder, CEO, and Chairman. Walchek is a frequent fintech/insurtech conference speaker (Money20/20 US 2018, Paris Fintech Forum, Hong Kong FinTech Week).
Most recently, in early 2024 he co-founded and became CEO of RecovryAI, which develops physician-prescribed, patient-facing clinical "Virtual Care Assistants" that guide patients through post-surgical recovery. He studied at UC San Diego (undergraduate, pre-med/pre-law, late 1970s) and, with his family, established the W Charitable Foundation in 2006.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests as an individual angel and advisor at the seed/early stage, typically in areas where he has deep operating experience: fintech, insurtech, marketplaces, and software — and increasingly health/med-tech AI.
- Backs founder-led companies where he can add value as a director or advisor, reflected in board seats at Canopy, Revalesio, and Happy Money.
- Draws on a track record of picking category-defining companies early (Baidu) and building/exiting his own startups, so he tends to favor founders with conviction and a defensible market position.
- Serves as a Senior Advisor at Ten VC, extending his angel activity into fund-level advising.
