Background
Sean Goodrich is a co-founder and Managing Director of Aether Investment Partners, a Denver-based investment adviser founded in 2008 and focused on private real-assets investments. Aether’s website says Goodrich is responsible for sourcing, evaluating, and monitoring investments.
Before forming Aether, Goodrich was Director of Alternative Investments at Jeffrey Slocum & Associates, Inc., where he led private capital and real-assets research. In that role, he designed investment portfolios and sourced, evaluated, and monitored private equity, venture capital, special situation, real estate, and natural-resource investments for institutional clients. He also served on fund advisory committees, supervised analysts and associates, helped direct hedge-fund research, and served on Slocum’s Hedge Fund and Strategic Development Committees.
Earlier in his career, Goodrich worked at First Union Securities as an analyst, at Trigon Engineering Consultants as an engineering technician, and at Cantor Fitzgerald, L.P. as a trader and institutional salesman. He earned a BS in Business with a minor in Russian from St. Michael’s College, graduating with honors, and an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a member of Beta Gamma Sigma. He is a CFA charterholder.
Aether’s SEC filings state that, as of December 31, 2023, the firm had managed more than $1.6 billion in commitments across nine investment vehicles and, since inception, had reviewed more than 2,500 private real-assets opportunities and made more than 60 investments.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Aether focuses on private investments in real assets globally, primarily natural resources and infrastructure.
- The firm’s listed investment types are seed investments, co-investments, directs, primaries, and secondaries.
- “Seed investments” at Aether means commitments to new vehicles with interests in management fees and/or carry, not necessarily startup seed rounds.
- Aether’s 2024 interval-fund filing describes an objective to generate attractive returns, provide differentiated exposure relative to other asset classes, and hedge long-term inflation.
- Aether’s disclosed fund strategy includes secondary purchases of interests in infrastructure or natural-resources private funds, direct equity and/or debt co-investments alongside sponsors, and primary investments in companies or private funds.
- Goodrich said Aether wants to “capitalize on broader deal flow,” including shorter-hold opportunities and long-duration ownership of cash-flowing assets.
- The firm considers infrastructure assets such as renewable energy, energy transition, conventional power, midstream assets, communications and digital networks, airports, toll roads, bridges, water infrastructure, ships, aircraft, railcars, metal/mineral processing, and agriculture processing.
- Natural-resources areas include oil and gas, metals and minerals, agriculture, environmental and carbon credits, food and agribusiness, water rights, aquaculture, livestock, timber, mitigation banking, and environmental services.
Notable Investments
- Aether Infrastructure & Natural Resources Fund - Closed-end interval fund filed with the SEC in February 2024 to provide exposure to infrastructure and natural-resources investments through secondaries, direct equity/debt co-investments, primaries, public securities, commodities, ETFs, SPVs, and joint ventures.
- Aether Real Assets SONJ Fund, L.P. - Separate account / fund vehicle tied to the New Jersey Division of Investment’s $135 million mandate announced in 2017 to diversify real-assets exposure across agriculture, timber, metals, mining, oil and gas, secondary-market opportunities, and co-investments.
- Rambler Metals and Mining plc - In June 2020, Aether Real Assets Co-Investment I, L.P. provided a $1 million unsecured bridge loan to the copper and gold producer/developer, with stated intent to convert into equity subject to fundraising terms.
- Aether Real Assets Seed Partners I, L.P. - Aether-managed private fund named in SEC co-investment-relief filings; the vehicle is part of Aether’s seed-investment strategy for real-assets managers/vehicles.
- Aether Real Assets II, III, III Surplus, IV, and V - Aether-managed private real-assets vehicles named in SEC filings, used across the firm’s natural-resources and infrastructure strategy.
