Sean Barnes

Sean Barnes is a finance executive with 15+ years of experience across insurance, government contracting, and public-company finance. He joined United Educators in 2018 and currently serves as Vice President of Finance and Administration, Chief Financial Officer, and Chief Investment Officer. In that combined role he oversees UE's investment portfolio, finance, accounting, treasury, information technology, and project management, and he co-leads the company's strategic planning. His stated mandate is to optimize investment returns, provide financial insight to the organization, and help UE retain its standing as a top workplace.

Before UE, Barnes was Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Assure Holdings Corp., where he modernized the company's finance and accounting functions and supported capital-raising efforts. Earlier in his career he began in public accounting at Johnson Lambert & Co. LLP, auditing property-casualty insurers, and held roles touching SEC reporting, consolidations, accounting, and M&A across several industries. Aggregator profiles also associate him with BAE Systems and GTSI earlier in his career.

Barnes holds a bachelor's degree in accounting from James Madison University and an MBA from George Mason University. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in Virginia and has completed The Institutes' Associate in Insurance Accounting and Finance (AIAF) program. He is a married father of two who lives in Vienna, Virginia; his interests include exercise, golf, travel, and time at the beach.

United Educators itself, which he helps steer financially, is "Education's Own Insurance Company" — a reciprocal risk retention group founded in 1987 by 59 educational institutions. It provides liability insurance (limits up to $35 million) and risk-management services to K-12 districts, independent and charter schools, and colleges and universities across 48 states, and carries an "A (Excellent)" rating from AM Best.

• Institutional, not venture. As Chief Investment Officer, Barnes's remit is managing United Educators' investment portfolio — the reserves and member capital of an insurance company — with a mandate to "optimize investment returns" and provide financial insight to the organization. This is long-horizon, risk-managed institutional asset management, not startup deal-making.
