Background
Serge Crasnianski (born 3 July 1942) is a French entrepreneur, inventor and nuclear physicist by training. At the age of 20 he filed his first patent — for an automatic key-cutting machine, the first of its kind — and in 1963 founded Grenoble-based Key Independent System (KIS). KIS grew into a global manufacturer of the compact self-service machines found in hardware shops worldwide that cut keys, print business cards and engrave bracelets. Over his career he has been credited with more than 100 (by some accounts several hundred) patents, with recent work focused on organic and inorganic cell production and printing in non-vacuum environments.
In 1994 KIS was acquired by Photo-Me International (PMI), the photo-booth operator since renamed ME Group International PLC, and KIS became Photo-Me's manufacturing arm. Crasnianski joined the PMI board as a non-executive director in 1990, became an executive director in 1994, and was appointed CEO in 1998. He led the company until 2007, when he was ousted amid declining profitability, then returned as a non-executive director in May 2009 and was subsequently reappointed to the executive leadership — becoming Deputy Chairman and Joint/Chief Executive from around 2010. He won the Entrepreneur of the Year Award at the 2016 PLC Awards.
Crasnianski is the largest shareholder in ME Group. His holding stood at 22.11% as of April 2010, and he and close relatives have more recently controlled roughly a 36% stake, worth on the order of £150 million. Members of his family are also active in the business and in investment: Tania Crasnianski is a non-executive director of ME Group and served as Head of Global Investments at Stratford Capital between 2006 and 2014, and Vladimir Crasneanscki was appointed Deputy Chief Executive Officer of ME Group in June 2025.
Stratford Capital (stratford-capital.com) appears to be Crasnianski's personal/family investment vehicle, distinct from the U.S. affordable-housing firm Stratford Capital Group. Public documentation of its specific angel/seed activity is limited; the firm's own website was not reachable at the time of research.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Operates as a high-net-worth angel / family-office investor through Stratford Capital, classified at seed-stage entry.
- Deep affinity for hardware, imaging, self-service kiosks and manufacturing technology — the fields he pioneered and patented across six decades (key-cutting, photo booths, printing, laundry, and cell/solar production).
- As a prolific inventor-founder, he is naturally oriented toward technical, IP-heavy businesses rather than pure-software plays.
- His primary capital exposure remains his ~36% controlling stake in ME Group International, reflecting a founder-operator conviction style of long-term ownership rather than diversified portfolio churning.
- Note: no publicly quoted personal investment thesis statement was found; the above is inferred from his verified career and holdings.
Notable Investments
- KIS (Key Independent System) — founded 1963, Grenoble; global automated key-cutting and self-service imaging/printing manufacturer. Acquired by Photo-Me International in 1994; now ME Group's manufacturing business.
