Background

Serik Kaldykulov is the founder and managing partner of Elefund, a Mountain View, California–based micro venture capital firm he co-founded in 2015. Born in Kazakhstan, he caught the value-investing bug as an undergraduate at Colorado State University, where he studied Finance and Financial Management, and set up his own small hedge fund from his dorm room in 2007. His early career was in public equities, where he applied the value-investing principles pioneered by Benjamin Graham and David Dodd — a framework that later became a cornerstone of Elefund's approach.

After watching market psychology play out during the 2008–09 financial crisis, Kaldykulov shifted toward early-stage startup investing. He began angel investing, writing some of the first checks into companies that became unicorns — Robinhood, Calm, and Carta among them. In 2015 he formalized these efforts with former college classmate Arik Crissi to launch Elefund as a micro VC firm.

Elefund's first fund was roughly $9 million; in May 2021 the firm announced a $30 million second fund. For the second fund, Elefund added general partner Nate Rodland, a former Robinhood cofounder and COO. The firm's first fund was reported to be tracking toward roughly a 25x return, anchored by its early Robinhood position.

Kaldykulov describes his core belief as the idea that "businesses create value by masterfully solving complex problems with a simple toolkit," and cites discipline, grit, and an inquiring mind as the qualities he most values in leaders.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests at pre-seed through Series A, typically writing ~$1M initial checks, with a fund built to hold roughly 25–30 companies.
  • Focuses on fintech, insurtech, consumer/subscription apps, enterprise software, and AI, but is fundamentally founder- and problem-centric — he emphasizes backing "the smartest people regardless of the industry or markets."
  • His central diligence question before investing: *"How fundamental is the problem you're solving?"*
  • Roots his approach in value-investing discipline (Graham & Dodd), evaluating opportunities on the durability and importance of the problem rather than hype.
  • Values founders who can answer *"Why am I the right person to solve this problem?"* and who prioritize product-market fit, team development, and market dominance.
  • On what actually convinces LPs and validates a strategy, he is blunt: *"We can talk about frameworks and that we understand consumer behavior but it doesn't matter. In the end, they want to see what companies we are investing in."*

  • Calm — meditation and sleep consumer app; early backer.
  • Pie Insurance — small-business workers'-comp insurtech; founding investor, later raised a $120M Series C (2021) and hundreds of millions in total.
  • Astranis — geostationary small-satellite / space-internet company.
  • Rubicon Global — waste and recycling technology with a social/environmental angle.
