Background
Seth Hendon is an Advisory Partner at Tinicum, the New York–based private investment firm founded by Derald H. Ruttenberg. He joined Tinicum in 1991 and has spent the bulk of his career there, working on the firm's acquisitions of and long-term investments in operating businesses. Tinicum's philosophy — captured in Ruttenberg's line "You can only sell a business once" — centers on buying and holding companies for decades rather than pursuing quick, financially engineered exits.
Before Tinicum, Hendon worked at Goldman Sachs in its Structured Finance Group from 1986 to 1988. He holds an AB from Dartmouth College and a JD from Yale Law School, and he is a member of the New York Bar — a legal and structured-finance background that fits Tinicum's deal-oriented, control-investment model.
Over his tenure Hendon has served on the boards of numerous Tinicum portfolio and affiliated companies, including Enesco, LLC; F+W Media, Inc.; Hallmark Data Systems, LLC; Palm Coast Data, LLC; HCBF Holding Company; and Skyway Towers Holdings, LLC (and Skyway Towers Holdings II, LLC). These roles span media/publishing, data services, banking, and telecom-tower infrastructure.
Outside of investing, Hendon is Chairman of the Wild Tomorrow Fund, a conservation nonprofit focused on protecting wildlife and habitat (notably in southern Africa). He has been publicly associated with the organization's fundraising efforts, including a Team Elephant entry in the New York City Marathon.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests as part of Tinicum's control-acquisition model: buying established, profitable private companies and holding them for the very long term (Tinicum cites a 25-year horizon and holds of 28+ years).
- Focuses on diversified industrials — aerospace, defense, medical devices, specialty manufacturing, distribution, and infrastructure — rather than early-stage technology.
- Partners with founders and families: a majority of Tinicum's core holdings are owned alongside the companies' founding families.
- Emphasizes operational strengthening — management talent, R&D, and capex — over financial leverage; the firm reinvests heavily (>$300M/year across the portfolio) and takes a cautious approach to debt.
- Strong alignment of interests: over 30% of Tinicum's capital reportedly comes from the firm's own employees and their families.
