Background
Seung June Lee is a veteran South Korean private-equity dealmaker. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Seoul National University (roughly 1996–2000) and began his career in 2000 as a consultant at accounting firm Samil PwC (PwC Korea), later working at Citigroup Global Markets. From 2006 to 2014 he was part of Goldman Sachs' investment banking group in Korea, where in 2008 he advised TPG on its divestiture of Hanaro Telecom to SK Telecom.
In 2014 Lee left Goldman to join TPG as a principal (initially covering Korean deals from Hong Kong) when the Texas-based firm re-entered the Korean market, eventually becoming a Managing Director in TPG's Seoul office. There he led several of TPG's marquee Korean buyouts, including the 2017 acquisition of a 65% stake in Moleem Corp. — parent of luxury-vinyl-tile flooring maker Nox Corp. — for about ₩360 billion (~$249.8M), and the December 2019 purchase of a 100% stake in dietary-supplement maker Health Balance from Anchor Equity Partners for roughly $218M.
On October 20, 2022, Lee resigned from TPG to return to Goldman Sachs, this time as the bank's head of private equity in South Korea, tasked with expanding Goldman's direct PE investments in Korea — deploying capital such as the $9.7 billion West Street Capital Partners VIII fund into upper-mid-market healthcare, technology, and consumer targets.
Note on classification: The stub data labeling Seung June Lee as an "Angel Investor" focused on "Seed Round" deals appears to be inaccurate aggregator data. All primary reporting describes him as an institutional private-equity executive doing control-stake buyouts of established companies, not early-stage/angel investing. (He is also distinct from Sanghoon Lee, the son of former Samsung vice chairman Lee Hak-soo, who ran TPG's Korea business separately.)
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests as an institutional PE principal, not as a personal angel — writing large equity checks (his TPG deals were ~$200M+) for control buyouts and growth capital rather than seed rounds.
- Sector emphasis on healthcare, technology, and consumer businesses, consistent with both his TPG track record (flooring/materials, dietary supplements) and his current Goldman mandate.
- Targets upper-mid-market Korean companies — established, scalable businesses where a global sponsor can add operational value and expansion capital.
- Deep local sourcing edge: two decades across Samil PwC, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, and TPG give him extensive Korean corporate, chaebol, and intermediary networks.
Notable Investments
- Moleem Corp. / Nox Corp. — TPG acquired a 65% stake (~₩360B / ~$249.8M) in 2017; Nox is a leading Korean luxury-vinyl-tile (LVT) flooring manufacturer.
- Health Balance — TPG bought 100% of the Korean dietary-supplement maker from Anchor Equity Partners for ~$218M in December 2019.
- Hanaro Telecom (advisory) — In 2008, as a Goldman Sachs banker, he advised TPG on its exit/divestiture of Hanaro Telecom to SK Telecom.
- Goldman Sachs Korea PE (2022–present) — leading deployment of Goldman's direct PE funds (e.g., West Street Capital Partners VIII) into Korean upper-mid-market deals.
