Shailesh Mehta

Shailesh J. Mehta is best known as the former Chairman and CEO of Providian Financial Corporation, a Fortune 500 (roughly Fortune 300) consumer-lending and credit-card company with over $30 billion in assets and more than 18 million customers. He joined the founding team of First Deposit Corporation — Providian's predecessor — in 1986 and helped scale it from about 80 employees to over 12,000 before departing in 2000. Prior to that, he spent roughly twelve years as an Executive Vice President at Ohio-based Ameritrust Corporation (later part of KeyCorp), then one of the largest banks in the state.

Mehta earned a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Bombay (1971) and went on to complete master's and doctoral degrees in Operations Research and Computer Science at Case Western Reserve University's Weatherhead School of Management. He is a major benefactor of his alma mater: IIT Bombay's management school was renamed the Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management (SJMSOM) in 2000 in recognition of his philanthropy, funded through the Shailesh J. Mehta and Kalpa S. Mehta Charitable Foundation.

After leaving Providian in 2000, Mehta transitioned into venture and private-equity investing across the U.S. and India. He served as Operating General Partner at WestBridge Capital (which became Sequoia Capital India), General Partner with Invesco Private Capital, and Managing General Partner with Granite Hill Capital, before becoming an Operating Partner at Madison India Capital. Across his career he brings 40+ years of experience as an entrepreneur, Fortune 500 CEO, and investor, and is repeatedly recognized for corporate citizenship and philanthropy (including the Case Western Weatherhead Hall of Fame).

• Works as an operating partner rather than a pure financial investor — he embeds with portfolio companies "to help improve efficiencies and build value," leveraging his operating experience running a large consumer-lending business.
• Deep specialization in financial services and lending / NBFCs — housing finance, small-ticket mortgages, and secured lending are recurring themes across his board seats (Aptus, India Shelter, Vistaar).
• At Madison India, the platform targets profitable, high-growth middle-market companies with $10–35M equity checks across financial services, consumer, business services, healthcare, and technology.
• Value-add is operational: risk management, analytics-driven underwriting, and scaling teams — the same playbook he used building First Deposit/Providian from ~80 to 12,000 employees.
