Background

Shane Farragher is an investment professional at Exponent Private Equity, the London-headquartered mid-market buyout firm he joined in July 2017. Originally from Galway, Ireland, he studied Economics and History at Trinity College Dublin and went on to earn an MSc in Economics from University College London. Before Exponent, he worked in private equity and investment roles at CVC Capital Partners and Bain Capital, two of the larger global buyout/credit platforms — giving him a deal background well above the angel/seed level the stub data suggests.

At Exponent, Farragher sits on the firm's investment side and has been actively involved across several of the firm's transactions, including Meadow (dairy and food ingredients), Dennis (specialist media/publishing), Gü (premium chilled desserts), Natara, and Ethos Engineering (sustainable, mission-critical data-centre design). He currently serves on the boards of Gü, Natara and Ethos Engineering, and works closely with Spotlight Sports Group. He previously sat on the board of Meadow.

Exponent itself was founded in 2004 by Tom Sweet-Escott and Hugh Richards (out of the former 3i buyouts team) and invests in established European mid-market businesses using a "good-to-growth" model — backing companies that are already market leaders and investing in their capabilities to drive revenue-led profit growth. The firm closed its fifth flagship fund at over €1 billion (c. £900m) and operates from offices in London, Dublin and Amsterdam.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Institutional mid-market control buyouts, not angel/seed deals — typically backing businesses with enterprise values of ~€150m–€500m
  • Targets established, market-leading European businesses that are corporate-, family- or founder-owned ("primaries"), often becoming the first institutional investor in the company
  • Pursues a "good-to-growth" strategy: investing in management, capabilities and operations to deliver organic, revenue-driven profit growth rather than relying on financial engineering
  • Sector breadth with real depth in healthcare/pharma, consumer & food brands, media, technology/digital consultancy, and mission-critical infrastructure/engineering
  • Geographic focus on the UK, Ireland, Benelux and the Nordics, run from London, Dublin and Amsterdam
  • Distinctive approach of integrating industrialists/operating partners into the investment and value-creation process
