Background
Shant Mardirossian is a career private-equity operations and finance executive. He spent nearly 30 years at Kohlberg & Company, a middle-market buyout firm, which he joined in 1996. He was named Chief Financial Officer in 1999, elected Partner in 2005, and appointed Chief Operating Officer in 2013. As a member of Kohlberg's Investment Committee, he oversaw investor relations and the firm's financial, compliance, and administrative functions, helping build and scale the platform into a roughly $17 billion institutional investment manager.
Before Kohlberg, he managed the accounting and administration of private investment partnerships and several funds-of-funds for McKinsey & Company's investment office, and earlier worked at Paneth, Haber & Zimmerman, a public accounting firm. He earned both a B.B.A. and an M.B.A. from the Lubin School of Business at Pace University.
In March 2026, Littlejohn & Co., a Greenwich, Connecticut–based private investment firm, announced it had hired Mardirossian into the newly created role of Managing Director, Chief Operating Officer, and Head of Strategic Initiatives. He sits on the firm's investment committees and works with the managing partners and department heads across finance, legal, compliance, operations, and investor relations to advance strategic objectives. Littlejohn CEO Michael Klein described him as "a highly respected leader with unparalleled insights into the private equity sector."
Beyond his professional roles, Mardirossian is a prominent figure in Armenian-American philanthropy and humanitarian work. He joined the Board of Directors of the Near East Foundation (NEF) in 2002, served as its Board Chair from 2007 to 2015 (its centenary year), and continues as Chairman Emeritus. He has been associated with humanitarian causes including the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative, and has represented NEF at civic events such as presenting the ANCA Freedom Award.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Operates as an institutional private-equity executive, not a personal angel/seed investor — his "investing" is through firm Investment Committees (Kohlberg's, and now Littlejohn's), which pursue control buyouts of established middle-market companies.
- Kohlberg's strategy, which he helped run operationally, centered on defensive-growth middle-market businesses across industrials/manufacturing, business services, healthcare, and consumer sectors in North America.
- His distinctive value-add is on the operations, finance, compliance, and investor-relations side — building and scaling investment platforms rather than sourcing early-stage venture deals.
- At Littlejohn his mandate is explicitly strategic: overseeing strategic direction, supporting growth initiatives, and driving performance "for the firm and investors."
- Note for founders: the stub's "Angel Investors / Seed Round" classification is not supported by public sources. Treat him as a middle-market PE operator/LP-facing leader unless you have direct evidence of personal angel activity.
Notable Investments
- Amendia, Inc. — medical-device/spinal-surgery company; served as a board member (Kohlberg-affiliated portfolio context).
- NBG Home — home décor and consumer products company; board member.
- Katy Industries — diversified industrial manufacturer; board member.
- Near East Foundation — international development NGO; Board Chair (2007–2015), now Chairman Emeritus (governance, not an investment).
