Sheikh Al Thani

Sheikh Ali bin Alwaleed Al-Thani is the Chief Executive Officer of Investment Promotion Agency Qatar, known publicly as Invest Qatar. The agency was established in 2019 to oversee investment promotion activities and attract foreign direct investment into Qatar, with a mandate to support economic diversification and development.

At Invest Qatar, Sheikh Ali leads an organization that connects investors with Qatar’s business and licensing ecosystem, provides sector-specific market knowledge, and supports investors from exploration and setup through expansion. Invest Qatar’s official CEO message describes the agency as “your access to Qatar” and a “single and complete source for investment solutions.”

Before becoming CEO, Sheikh Ali served as Coordinator for Economic Affairs at the Prime Minister’s office, overseeing activities related to Qatar’s economic and investment agenda. Earlier, he was Director of the State of Qatar’s Office to the World Trade Organization in Geneva, where he worked on WTO negotiations and standing committees covering market access, agriculture, trade and investment, subsidies, and related areas. In 2017, he was elected by consensus as Chairman of the WTO’s Trade-Related Investment Measures Committee.

He also served as Commercial Attaché to Qatar’s permanent mission to the United Nations, covering negotiations and committees in UNCTAD and the World Intellectual Property Organization. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University and an Executive Master’s in International Negotiation and Policymaking from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva.
