Background

Shinji Miyashita is a veteran Japanese venture capitalist with roots in cross-border U.S.–Japan technology investing. He began his career in finance at Sumitomo-Mitsui Bank, Ltd., before moving into venture capital in 1989, when he joined Techno-Venture Co., Ltd. as an Investment Officer. Techno-Venture is frequently described as Japan's oldest venture capital company, giving Miyashita early, hands-on exposure to institutional venture investing.

He left Techno-Venture in late 1999 and, in 2000, co-founded CrossBridge. Across the related fund vehicles, he serves as Managing Director and General Partner of CrossBridge I and as Managing Director and General Partner of CrossTechnology II & III — the funds operated under the CrossTechnology Venture Partners banner (crosstech-vp.com). His firm has positioned itself as a bridge between U.S. technology startups and Japanese capital and market access. Biographical material describing him as having "over 19 years of venture capital investment experience" appears to date from roughly the late 2000s; measured from his 1989 start, his actual tenure now spans more than three decades.

Miyashita's education is international in character. He earned a BA in Economics with Honors from Rikkyo University (St. Paul's University) in Tokyo. Through St. Paul's International Center he studied International Relations at Nijmegen University in the Netherlands, and he completed European Studies programs at the J.F. Kennedy Institute at Tilburg University in the Netherlands, sponsored by Indiana University's School of Business.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests as an institutional general partner across CrossBridge / CrossTechnology fund vehicles rather than as a one-off angel.
  • Focus on technology and infrastructure: enterprise applications, enterprise infrastructure, semiconductors, telecom/networking, mobile, and high-tech.
  • Stage profile skews toward growth and mid-to-late rounds — CrossBridge's tracked deals cluster around Series B through Series F — with an emphasis on companies that can scale internationally.
  • Cross-border value-add: helping U.S. portfolio companies access Japanese strategic partners, customers, and capital is a recurring theme of the firm's positioning.

Notable Investments

  • Good Technology — mobile security and device-management software; later acquired by BlackBerry (2015).
  • eSilicon Corp. — custom ASIC / semiconductor design services; acquired by Inphi (2019).
  • Elance — online freelance/work marketplace; merged with oDesk and rebranded as Upwork.
  • Orchestria Corp. — data loss prevention (DLP) software; acquired by CA / Computer Associates (2009).
